Skype freezing
« on: August 10, 2010, 04:38:19 PM »
After doing my weekly update on 8-4-2010, my Skype started freezing up.

It loads and will let me click through to options then freezes and I have to close it.

I tried downloading and reinstalling skype several times, nuked the skype folder then reinstalled, all to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Do you have pulseaudio installed? If it is, is it disabled?

Um, don't really know.  How do I find out and how do I find out if it is disabled or not

You can start in PCLOS Control Center. Go to the Hardware Section, then Click Sound Configuration. Is Enable PaulseAudio checked? You probably also want to check Enable user switching.

But, before doing that, start Synaptic, click the Search button, then type pulseaudio in the search box to see if it is installed.

libalsa-plugins-pulseaudio
libpulseaudio0
libpulseglib20
soundwrapper
xine-pulse

This is what I have showing installed when searching for pulseaudio in package manager.
In sound config I have exactly what you have in the screenshot.  I checked the boxes and it makes no difference.  Skype still freezes.  I tried to make a call and it rang my cell phone but when I open the options window in Skype, it freezes and I have to close it.

Configure Your Computer > Network and Internet > Networking > Advanced > TCP/IP  and tick, disable IPv6

Let us see what happens.   :)

russ,

Start skype from a terminal so we can see the output. Open a terminal, then type skype to launch the program. Copy the error messages in the terminal and post them here.

I had hoped we would have seen an error here. I think it is time to tell a bit about your pc model etc. as I am out of immediate ideas, I was planning to get around to install skype but going to wait a while.   ;D

Doing a bit of googling was not comforting but it did seem to be older stuff I got but enough to just hold off a bit until I know my system is ok.

It was accidental I saw that I had actually asked that question, I need an implantation of new RAM   ;D ;D

Skype worked fine until I did the 8-4 update thing.  I have no idea what happened but believe it was something in the update.  Tried to find an older Skype to install with no success.  Had to do that in Windows as the latest version of Skype kept crashing.

I came over to PCLinuxOS just 2 months ago from Windows and have been very happy.  I still have money credit with Skype and wanted to continue using it.  I am unable to use my Skype cordless phone with PCOS as they don't have a driver for Linux but I can live with that.  Guess if I want to use Skype I can boot into, ugh, Windows.  Hate to do that, though, as every time I do I have to go through an hour of updates before I can do anything.

Thanks for trying on my behalf.  Something will turn up.
