[SOLVED] Intel Video Driver Bug causes X display crash
« on: August 09, 2010, 06:50:56 PM »
This error  [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung (found in /var/log/messages) followed by X display crash happens with all 2.6.32 kernels in the repository.

It does not seem to happen with the 2.6.31-12 kernel that is in the repository.

I also have one machine running 2.6.32-12 (no longer available in the reops) and it does _not_ have this problem.

---------------------

Fully updated 2010.  This has happened a few times. I have to power down and restart.  Is there a workaround?

This happens with 2.6.33.7. My  daughter has an identical machine with slightly older installation running 2.6.32-12 with no problems.

I can't find 2.6.32-12 in the repos, only 2.6.31-12.  And yes I'm sure her machine is running 2.6.32-12, I checked (uname -u) more than once.

What kernel are you using?  I'm using kernel 2.6.33.7-pclos1.bfs on an older ACER without a problem. It has an Intel 945 in it.

2.6.33-5 that comes with latest ISO. I see -7 is in the repo, I'll give it a try

X just crashed with 2.6.33-7 bfs

I am now running 2.6.33-7 vanilla

A colleague and I were looking at a spreadsheet when it crashed. He asked what happened and I  explained "I just upgraded the machine and this now I have this problem.  It is an old bug that was fixed long ago and now came back"  "oh, just like windows" he replied ...

I am not making this up. Most folks around here use macs.

gilado,

What are your system specifications?   In addition, run the lspci command from a terminal and post your results.

The 2.6.32 kernel is now at version 2.6.32.17 in the repositories.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Which kernel were you using before you installed 2.6.33.7 bfs? If you are sure it's the kernel, why not go back to using the previous one?

Tex does not use generic kernels. He looks for patches for known problems to try to avoid these types of regressions. Just because others are having problems with a specific kernel, doesn't automatically prove that this is the source of your problem. If you make a conclusions too quickly, you may prevent someone from collecting the evidence necessary to help you. If this is a kernel problem, we would all like to see it confirmed so we can get it patched.

I was running 2.6.33-5 (see above.) It had this problem that's why I tried the -7

I'll try the 2.6.32-17

2.6.32-17 crashes the same way

I have been running 2.6.31-12 for couple days with no crashes, so I'll stick with it for now.

I'm glad that you found a solution. Keep watching for newer kernels. I've seen many posts online about video driver fixes getting added all of the time. I'm sure it won't be long before the newer kernels work for you.
