KDE login greeting screen crashing
« on: August 08, 2010, 01:37:03 AM »
Hello again everyone.

After doing the recent updates my KDE login screen has started crashing.  Is this related to the ImageMagick updates?  Just to tell you I'm using PCLinuxOS 2010.7.

First post  ;D

Yep..same here.
Finally fixed it by going into: KDE Configure Desktop.....Advanced.... Login Manager...
And select a different Theme.
That should fix it.

No problems here either, login as smooth as butter (with both auto-login and "manual" login)

Welcome to the forum Alfred. Enjoy Your time here. Nice first post btw. with a solution.

I am using autologin so... I dont even see KDM... (PCC > Boot > Autologin).

It could be a temporary fix for the logging in without crash assuming You're the only user on the machine (if Alfred's fix won't work).

Oh and I forgot to mention that this is not the first time I heard of this issue.

Someone was reporting it on irc #pclinuxos-support channel... Will check logs to see who.

Thanks for the warm welcome Andy.

I have come across from Mandriva, where I have run the MDV PWP version since 2006.
Before that I used SuSE for 4 ~ 5 years. I am not a Distro hopper as it takes too long to get to know a specific Distro, which you can't do if you keep hopping from Distro to Distro.

Back to the subject at hand.
Mine showed exactly the same as the person you quoted, i.e: kdm-greed throws up a floating point error.
I don't know your ways here at PCLinuxOS in regards to how you log bugs, but this could be a bit of a deal breaker if this happens to a Newbie. As it leaves them at a shell Logon Screen with a cursor.

If it happens to you and you are a Newbie, this is all you have to do to get into your system:

At the Logon Shell:
1) type in your User name and hit Enter:
2) Now enter your password:
3) Now type: startx   (and hit Enter)

This will get you back into your normal Desktop.

The problem is "theme" related as I can repeat the problem again and again by choosing any theme but the default one.
This problem just happened in the latest update.

So then do you think the default theme is to blame? ???

Sorry, I am not trying to hijack your topic but I was about to raise a new topic had googled with little success when forum search came up with this thread.  My details:

I had just started up LXDE done a bit of work and then rebooted the system to go back to my main pclos2010-KDE (fully updated) the startup process seemed to go ok and just on or starting the last splashscreen when the 'the screen' was replaced with black screen and nice picture in the middle and cute little red bug top left corner of the small new window.

Something about sending report away, but no report could be produced.  I have written down the main text:

Executable kdm_greet PID Signal: 8 (Floating point exception)

Can't say it lifts the spirit to see such a message, any suggestions what I am up against?

By closing this message twice I get normall tty1 login line. I can login as user and using startx all seems well and I can use the pc as normal and I would not know I have a problem.  Though I have this feeling it is just not as fast as it used to be.     :D

I have not tested the theme option yet, a bit busy on other problems.  I have now feeling what program might be involved, I have done a small update last night but this has not solved the problem.

What is the content of your kdmrc file found here

Quote
/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

I will just throw this one in, how can one read this file:

Quote
/usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kdm/kdmrc-ref.docbook

Opens with Konqueror but I don't feel like reading it this way

Some other place with similar problem here in Forum there was a hint kdmrc was involved   ;D

Thank you, it confirmed that my kdmc probably is fine, only a few minor differences. Like user name and theme.

KDE Configure Desktop > System > Login Manager (need root) > General Tab >untick themed greeting

I have to have "Themed Greeting"  disabled then it works, default theme does not work.  I tried theme Starwolf but this failed too. Again had to disable themes.

Can you just go into more detail of your solution, like do you actually use a theme, from the Theme tab? or the'funny one' when disabling themed greeting?

I had the same problem only none of the fixes helped.  I finally ran genkdmconf as root with the --no-old option my problems stopped.  Perhaps this will help.

I did not know genkdmconf --no-old, not really game to try at this stage. I will get some hard drives and sort my backup out properly, then I will give it go as I can still easily turn the problem back on.

There is a README file in /etc/kde/kdm/ at the bottom of the file next to the last line there is a reference to the program. You may wish to check out the --help option.

I am on the confused side, in the directory /usr/share/config/kdm/ I have only the two marked files besides the README

kdmrc  <------------
backgroundrc <------

Xaccess
Xwilling
Xresources
Xsetup
Xstartup
Xreset
Xsession

Something made me think you sounded like you had more, could I have look at your directory content   :)

I still don't understand what genkdmconf does or what files are affected.

Assuming that it makes a new xdm-config I had look in the existing but I found nothing I really understood.

Thanks for the hints though. Found it most interesting fossicking around the various files.
