PCman freezes from time to time.
« on: August 07, 2010, 02:40:02 PM »
Can't find this in the forum, but maybe I didn't use the right search words.

I use LXDE on two computers, and have experienced this problem on both.

When working my way down a directory structure using PCman by clicking on the folder icon etc I find that frequently it fails to respond to a double click unless I change the view.  E.g. if I am in icon mode I switch to detailed list and vice versa.  It's then OK for a few more clicks and then freezes again.

Not serious, but a nuisance.

I should add that clicking on anything else works as it should.

How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

Hi.

I had a similar issue with pcmanfm which I raised here:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,76416.0.html

Further to that, I discovered there is a newer version source (0.9.7) than the one that is in the repo: 0.5.2

http://sourceforge.net/projects/pcmanfm/

I made a package request for an update and was told that this current version (0.9.7) of the source code is actually in the testing repo, since June 19, 2010.

It remains in testing because of library dependency issues apparently. My update-request post has since been deleted.  :-\

Yup, sounds like the same problem - but you don't seem to have discovered the quick fix:- change the view (which you can still do) and then use this until it freezes again.  Then go back to the original view.

I don't find that it's always the same level that locks up, sometimes it will go on OK for several double clicks.

I'm glad I found this post.  I am trying the LXDE live CD and encountered this problem, but I thought it was strictly related to my preference for double clicking.  I almost never use icon view, just a detailed listing when that's available.

I did not encounter any problems when using single clicking, just double clicking.  My workaround was to right click and 'Open in new Tab' which gave me a new tabbed window that worked for another double click after which I would have to do it again.  I was beginning to have a lot of tabs.   ;D

I never suspected that changing the view would help, but it does, so I now switch to icon view and back, and that clears the problem.  But I find myself having to do this constantly, which is not satisfactory at all.    :(

Hopefully this will be cleared up soon.

I like the single click way and use it and haven't encountered this problem.

But PCmanFM never worked out a Search for me. Googled it and saw this problem exists in other distros too.

... because cat gets integrated into Thunar and because I like it!   :-*

I do not know a fix for this. ::) I wish I did.
Let's see if we can find out any useful information. >> Start PCManFM from a terminal. Use it as you do normally. At the end of your session, check your terminal for output, if you had the freezing problem. Post the output here. Use copy and paste to get it exact.

Edit: When using Details view, does the folder that freezes have graphics files? (pictures)

Hi Neal.

When you start PCmanFM in a term the program starts and you get your command line back. When I start looking through directories it freezes any activity in the file view list only, the menu bar (and everything else) is still quite active. Switching away from detailed view fixes it until you switch back to detailed view and after one or two clicks it halts again in the file list window. No output on the term.  :(

Happens with double click mode and detailed view mode. You aren't getting this on your box? Can you confirm by adding a new user, selecting double click and then try detailed view mode?

No, I have for example groups of files which are mainly deep directories and it still does it. Any graphic file I come across have a only a graphic icon not a preview. I will check the preview settings and make sure they turned off..

There is a later version of this program in testing. Why cant we work on the dependency issues with that and just let version 0.5.2 die? It is known faulty and the original source tree has moved on to the much later version.

 :)

What do you think I do? :o LOL If I could fix the new version, do you think it would be in testing? ??? I want it as much, if not more than you do. :D
But as you ask, instead of trying to find a fix for this bug, I'll go back to trying to figure out how to get the new version to "play nice." :D Maybe my next efforts will work out. Maybe.

Hahaha. Peace. I just think it is a dead horse (the old version). I spent a fair bit of time on it a while back and posted an update request with lots of information and that post did not survive the move to the new server.  :-\
