I had been running 2009.2 with no problems, and this week I did a complete format & install of 2010.7. I was surprised that neither the Gnome or the KDE version recognized my wifi card, especially because the 2009 versions had no trouble. Used the ndiswrapper option, and that fixed it. I ended up going back to Gnome because I like it a little better.
But the *real* issue is that my laptop no longer shuts down or hibernates via the software buttons. I read through the archives, and saw that some people had issues with the 2009 version and the video drivers, but I seem to have the correct drivers installed (I think. How would I find out for certain?).
The machine goes through the normal shut-down routine, but stops when it gets to System Halted_
Hitting the power button immediately powers off the machine.
Likewise, the hibernate command hangs about 3/4 of the way through the routine, I've made sure that the power settings were enabled in the Control Center, but that hasn't made any difference. This happens in both the Gnome and KDE versions.
I'm open to suggestions, or at least some kind of guess as to why it worked in 2009.
