I've got this Linksys wmp54G adapter which someone on another thread recommended as working with Linux but I can't get it to work. I transferred the driver (.cat .inf and .sys) from the cd that came with it into my home directory but no joy. Where should I put these files? The cd was no help with Linux.

I've also noticed that the wlan0 device in the setup has changed to wlan4. Is this significant? What else can I do to get it to work? Thanks.

Is this a PCI connected device or USB?

Then the native rt61pci module should work for that card.

So why can't I get it working? I've tried all configurations in setting up a connection and am no nearer to a solution. ??? ;D

Did you modprobe the module, as root, and check to see that it has loaded?

That really is the early hours. :o

I forgot to mention that the Linksys adapter I bought off eBay was faulty - not incompatible but no power was getting to it, the power led was not lighting up.. It took me a couple of hours testing it before I noticed too.

So now I'm back to my original problem with my two identical D-LinkDWA510 adapters. On another thread on this forum one chap has suggested that the chipsets could be different. But there's no way of knowing what the chipsets are by just looking at the things. They look identical.

A Usb dongle is your friend.

 ::)

With the D-LinkDWA510 adapters. What happens if you swap them in each machine? Is it true that one of the cards will not work at all?

For a little bit more information about the card, try installing lshw (LiSt HardWare) from the repo. Run it from the command line and you might get more of an idea what the thing is.

Another question:

Can you connect to a  router that has no special radio long range/high speed features which may be unsupported by the card. Can you turn off encryption on the wifi temporarily to see if it connects.

What happens when you run "iwlist scan"  as root?

Edit: I see you've stated another thread. Disregard my post.

If I swap them the bad one is still bad, even though the lights flicker and the good one is still good.

I have turned off encryption frequently - no help.

iwlist - scanning not supported.

Can't get lshw - no connection on wife's computer.
