So why can't I get it working? I've tried all configurations in setting up a connection and am no nearer to a solution.

Did you modprobe the module, as root, and check to see that it has loaded?
I'm being dumb - but modprobe what?
[root@localhost ~]# modprobe rt61pci <Enter>
[root@localhost ~]# lsmod |grep pci <Enter>
rt61pci 16385 0
rt2x00pci 5443 1 rt61pci
rt2x00lib 23540 2 rt61pci,rt2x00pci

ide_pci_generic 2306 0
ide_core 85678 4 ide_generic,ide_pci_generic,amd74xx,ide_gd_mod
pci_hotplug 22568 1 shpchp
This is the output from my wife's compuyer - which doesn't have a connection

I appreciate you sticking around with this O-P. By my calculations it's the early hours of the morning in Illinois
