Similar functionality across DE's - how?

I like the different desktop environments and tend to gravitate to KDE most, but also enjoy the Gnome, XFCE and LXDE environments as well. However, only KDE works with my shortcut keys to increase and decrease sound volume. On my Dell Inspiron 1564 I use the F8 and F9 for down and up volume, respectively. As I said, in KDE they work perfectly without any configuration on my part.

How do I make that same thing work in the other DE's? I can install ACME to make it work in LXDE, but then I'm stuck with ACME in KDE as well. Is there a method to have a single way of using those keys for the same purpose in all DE's?

You'll have to configure key bindings for each de separately.  Some have gui for this and some you edit config files.  For ex. E17 has a GUI for "Key Bindings".

Thanks omskates. I'll give it a shot in each. In LXDE the only option was an install of ACME so I was stuck with it trying to also run when I booted into KDE, which I did not need or want running since KDE handles it perfectly. I'll see what I can find in the other DE's to not force an install of software only needed in those DE's.
