E17
« on: August 10, 2010, 07:00:29 PM »
Hi,

I recently tried switching from LXDE to E17 and can't for the life of me figure out the following:

1) The editor kate is missing an a picture in the icon, how do i add it (in LXDE you would just open the icon in an editor and edit it...
2) How do I set a screensaver
3) How do I add buttons to the desktop
4) Is there a trash can option like KDE or no?
5) Important: How do I make it show dropbox notifications and that dropbox is running!

I've been playing and playing with it, but it's just not trivial somehow... sorry if i'm missing something obvious. :(

EDIT:  I've fixed #1 and PARTIALLY #5. (I'll put all my answers in here in the hopes it helps somebody)!
1) Change the picture by right clicking on the kate link, then change icon properties, then under icon put in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/kate.png
5) Under the settings, go to apps. Then click startup applications then click dropbox. It should work after that. However, under LXDE and KDE I can right click dropbox and get a bunch of information (how much free space, recent files etc...). How do I do this under E17?

1) Right click the icon on kate's titlebar / edit icon
2) Settings Panel / Screen / Screensaver to enable xscreensaver
3) What do you mean?
4) Not yet.
5) Haven't tried but dropbox should show up in the systray, for notifications in e17 you have to enable the notification module.

Hi,

3) Say I wanted thunderbird on the desktop. Not sure how to add it!
5) I've gotten dropbox working but I don't seem to have a "system tray" in E17...I have an ibar...the dock in the center...

Also, the widget to adjust volume, doesn't seem to work. I put it the volume to 0 (or click mute) and it just keeps playing!

3) Copy the .desktop file from /usr/share/applications to your personal destkop folder.
5) Module 'systray' needs to be enabled, then you can add it as a gadget to your desktop or a shelf.

For dropbox you have to add it to your autostart applications.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

5) Completely works! Thanks! I use dropbox all the time so this makes the desktop useable now :-).
3) Desktop Icons now work! Thanks.

More on 2)
The Xscrensaver daemon is not loaded by default. If you try to open screensaver configurations it tells you that the daemon is not loaded on screen 0.0 and if you would like to enable it. To get that message to go away and load the daemon automatically the following was done: Make a file with "xscreensaver -nosplash &" in it and call it <filename> (I called it screensaver and put it in /.e/e/myfiles). chmod +x <filename>, add it as an application and have it start on autorun. From then on in the LXDE menu screensaver should work to customize the screensaver and you won't get that message. It would be nice if you can get the kde screensavers to load but I haven't figured out how to do that.

Remaining questions:
6) The mixer gadget does not actually change the sound. Whether it's on mute, at the highest setting or the lowest setting there is no effect.

Haven't used E17 in a while but try opening the mixer and change the master to a different channel until you find the right master.  That may not be the problem but it worked for me once.

Deamon should be loaded after enabling xscreensaver in the e17 settings, most probably you'll need to log out and back in to get it working.

Nope, tried them all and still nothing. Weird.

Is there a terminal command I can run and edit it through that?

Hmmm... for me the icon bug was resolved when I installed compositor and then the dock. E17 this way is a lot like Mac OSX. The
traditional menu is still available for infrequently accessed applications.

If you do need to edit, install gnome menu. E17 doesn't have its own menu editor. But all the GNOME, XFCE and LXDE applications will run on it.
