[SOLVED] Firefox Youtube Crashes
« on: August 01, 2010, 05:48:00 PM »
I had this problem for sometime, have gone to Mozilla and gotten little for the trouble.

Anytime I attempt to load a Youtube file from a link in Thunderbird, Firefox loads, loads the video and then promptly crashes at the point where the video is going to begin to play.  I can copy the link and attempt to run it in Firefox and Firefox still crashes.  I can go to Youtube, in Firefox, and play the video just fine.  So, its something about the embedded video that Firefox does not like.

I can open SeaMonkey and do a Copy and Paste from Thunderbird and the video plays just fine.

The above is true for a rather large percentage of embedded videos in Thunderbird that I try to open with Firefox.

The Seamonkey is a work around and I would used Seamonkey and delete Firefox from the system, if Seamonkey were better at displaying attached files on e-mail.

So, any clues?

My video is a Nvidia 9600 with 1gig ram.

Try to start Firefox from konsole and then do your "usual" thing, with luck you may get some error messages that can give some clue or allow Googling to give more clues.  :)

I neither like, nor understand, the error message I got.  Segmentation fault.

That usually means hard drive problems.  However, everything else works perfectly, just a problem in Firefox loading EMBEDDED videos.  If I log onto Youtube, the videos load perfectly.

Post the result of the output in konsole, your description is unhelpful, you have seen the fact, why not share it with Forum. Posting the print out may be helpful for others searching Forum to find an answer to similar happening for them.  ???

Doesn't that mean that two programs are trying to access the same segment in the RAM? To say Thunderbird and FireFox.

Can you explain a bit more what you mean by embedded video?

Is it just a regular hyperlink or is the actual video attached to the email?

Segfaults are general errors caused by bugs in software code, corrupt files, or bad settings.

Query: Does the same problem happen on Chromium browser? If so, then the issue is with flash, probably some bad settings of sorts. The first thing you can try after you confirm that the problem is with Flash is to reinstall flash-player-plugin. If that doesnt work, you can delete the .adobe and .macromedia folders out of your home folder.

Have you installed the gtk-kde4 package by any chance?

Thanks for the input.  However, we are still back where we were.

Menotu, what I meant by embedded video is a video link sent in an e-mail (Thunderbird is the e-mail reader I am using).

Zero Angel, I deleted ".adobe" and ".macromedia" and reinstalled the "flash" plugin and still had the same problem.  I installed "gtk-kde4 " and still had the same problem.  I deleted Firefox, rebooted and reinstalled it.  Still have the same problem.

This problem is there whether I try to do an "Open in Browser" from Thunderbird or do a "cut and paste" on the link.  There is something about the link having been in Thunderbird (I would imagine Kmail would produce the same results) that makes Firefox shut down after the page loads and just as the video is just about to start.

Chromium, Opera, Flock and Seamonkey all work fine.  Its only Firefox that crashes and then only when trying to play an embedded video from e-mail.  I can open Youtube (it does it on all files of this type but Youtube is the easiest to test with) in Firefox and search to the offending video and it plays fine.  The really odd thing is, both URL's look the same - the embedded and the on searched out on Youtube.,

Again thanks for the suggestions

Deb

Try mediaplayer-coonectivity (repo) for firefox and set it up to use only vlc as mediaplayer. Gives better results and less chrashes, vlc really plays anything you throw at it.

I watch video's on youtube using the html5 beta now in chromium and firefox 4 beta, i've learned most browser crashes come from flashplugin (except for chromium where only the plugin chrashes, almost never chromium)

I did not see mediaplayer-connectivity in the repo.  I did reset all helper apps in Firefox to either default or vlc.  Still same problem.  Well, maybe not.  The entire page loads, as it did, except now the little circle of dots spins on the screen and just at the point where the video should start to play, Firefox closes.

My bad: mediaplayerconnectivity is a firefox addon, you can get it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/446/

Well, Smurfslover, if it had not been for you I would not have gotten it fixed.  I installed the addon and it did not work.  HOWEVER, when the Addon frame came up, I noticed I had Flashreplacer installed.  I disabled it, will probably delete it, and tried Youtube again.  Worked like a champ, both from the site and from an embedded link.

Thanks, to one and all

Right now I have problem with Opera 10.70 which I can keep away with turning off plugins (suspect flash but can't prove yet)  :(

In this case if I don't my twin engined mother board will go into overload.  Since turning off plugins I have not seen that for almost a week now before guaranteed several times a day.

Starting to think you have a good idea there. (Gain faster Opera too I think, very subjective feeling)
