[SOLVED] newest upgrade ATI driver broke X
« on: August 01, 2010, 12:44:59 PM »
I upgraded the x11-video-driver-fglrx and X will no longer start, so I removed it and installed the proprietary driver from AMD. That worked, but the mouse cursor doesn't display, although the touchpad is actually working, I just can't tell where the pointer is except by observing what gets highlighted. Has anyone seen this behavior? This is a Toshiba L555D-7930 laptop with an ATI Radeon 4100. Any clues on how to diagnose this? Fortunately, I have another computer that works.

I reinstalled the x11 driver, still the Xserver crashed, so I ran XF drake from command line and disabled 3D and compositing then tested and it now runs OK. I've heard that GLX is broken in the latest ATI driver. Can anyone confirm?

It works fine with my Ati HD4350. Maybe try removing both packages with synaptic then re-installing them.

Tex, I've already done this. Same problem each time. I guess I'll have to live with this until another ATI update.

Try removing both packages, delete the /etc/ati folder, re-install then delete the /etc/ati/amdpcsdb file and then configure via the PCLinuxOS Control Center and see if that helps or not.  ???
