Just a general question. I have a root , me and my daughters as sign in. I update with synaptic on a regular basis in my side. Does this update my daughters side too or does she have to do it on her side? Or do I log in as root and this will update the whole system.?

When you log into synaptic it updates the whole system. You can do this from your user or your daughters user, you have to use the root password for synaptic. No need to log in as the root user.
