The webcam on the Acer netbook returns the same as on the HP laptop, same camera.
If Firefighters died and went to hell, they would just put it out!

Thanks .......  yes I have a webcam here that uses uvcvideo driver and it is 'plug & play' and works well.

So the jury is still out on this STV06xx webcam driver which does not seem to allow any of the webcams I assembled for this test to work.

I had some other webcams also but did not bother with them ---  there were two that used the LPT port and power from a splitter on the PS2 port  :D

Thanks again for your efforts.

The original question still stands so ..........  does anyone have this STV06xx driver working with their webcam in 2010 PCLOS?

I would dearly love to hear about it if you have.

regards.

OK, for the sake of completeness I went to find out what kinds of sensors these cameras have .....  thinking maybe it was a problem with one particular sensor type.

# grep STV /var/log/messages | grep sensor        gave me this

Quote
klogd: STV06xx: st6422 sensor detected
 klogd: STV06xx: st6422 sensor detected
 klogd: STV06xx: HDCS-1000/1100 sensor detected
 klogd: STV06xx: Disconnecting the sensor
 klogd: STV06xx: HDCS-1020 sensor detected
 klogd: STV06xx: vv6410 sensor detected
 klogd: STV06xx: HDCS-1000/1100 sensor detected
 klogd: STV06xx: Disconnecting the sensor

So the webcams appear to have at least four different sensors between them.

regards.

I got the time to summarise the results of my tests and here they are

Code: [Select]
046d : 08f6 Quantity 3 QuickCam Messenger Plus STV06xx
046d : 0870 Quantity 1 QuickCam Express STV06xx
046d : 0850 Quantity 1 QuickCam Web STV06xx
046d : 0801 Quantity 1 QuickCam Home #usbcore => no driver

0c45 : 6005 Quantity 1 Microdia Mini Cam (Sweex) sn9c102

None of the above are functioning .....  a total of 7 webcams.

04f2 : a147 Quantity 1 Chicony Electronic Co. uvcvideo Works perfectly

Not one of the older cameras functioned for me .......

1 had no driver
1 had the sn9c102 driver
5 had the STV06xx driver

OK, I thing that is about all I can get on this.

Still waiting for someone who uses either of those drivers .......  sn9c102,   STV06xx ..........   to post here and tell us.

regards.

Re-visiting .......  still have a bunch of cameras I cannot seem to use with PCLOS.

But I also tried today the
Sweex Microdia

Quote
ID 0c45:6005 Microdia Sweex Mini Webcam

and with some fiddling with the settings I have an acceptable picture from it!  Yeah!

Ekiga, Kopete wxcam all display ....  no luck so far with Skype. Nonetheless it is a step in the right direction.

This one uses the    sonixb    driver according to Kopete, and the   ‎sn9c102   according to PCC Hardware.

None of the cameras using the    STV06xx     driver have worked as yet.

Has anyone had any luck with this driver???????????

Which camera(s) have you had success with JohnBoy?

Webcam is one thing I've never been able to get to work either.  I have Creative's Live! Cam Voice (http://uk.creative.com/products/productarchive.asp?category=218&subcategory=219&product=14813&nav=)
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Cameras using   uvcvideo   seem to be no trouble at all. They would  be V4l2 cameras.

The cameras I have been trying to get to work are  v4l1 cameras using various drivers.
In my case the majority of the cameras are Logitech of various vintages.

In 2010 there seems to be an 'interpreter' between vl41 and v4l2 which I guess is supposed to allow the V4l1 cameras work in a v4l2 environment. At least that is the way it seems to me.

The v4l1 driver .... STV06xx ...  does not seem to work in this manner.
So the cameras depending on it won't display properly.

Again all this is what it appears - to me.

Regarding your webcam .....  run LSUSB from a terminal and see what it is ID's as ......  with the ID you can check the internet to find info about driver etc etc.

What driver is showing for it in PCC - Hardware?

The cam is in a drawer somewhere - I'll have to dig it out (when I can recall which drawer  ;) )

Recently bought a real cheapy.

Identification
Vendor: ‎Vimicro

Description: ‎Vimicro USB Camera (Altair)

Media class: ‎Video|Video Control

Connection
Bus: ‎USB

Bus PCI #: ‎5

PCI device #: ‎3

Vendor ID: ‎0x0ac8

Device ID: ‎0x3450

Misc
Module: ‎uvcvideo

Similar story, nothing worked - cheese made an attempt but nothing usable.

eventually got it working by uninstalling the microdia driver dkms-sn9c20x and using wxcam.
a coincedence - maybe, although wxcam did not work previously.
