V4l Webcams No Video
« on: July 31, 2010, 04:58:37 PM »
I have been attempting to get some older webcams functioning in PCLOS 2010 to pass on to some who want to use them ......  probably for Skype.

So first I try to get the cams working in some other video app ......  but no .....  not working properly ......

So here is the first one, I will list others as I get the info ........

Vendor: ‎Logitech, Inc.
Description: ‎Camera
Media class: ‎
Connection
Bus: ‎USB
Bus PCI #: ‎1
PCI device #: ‎7
Vendor ID: ‎0x046d
Device ID: ‎0x08f6
Misc
Module: ‎STV06xx

Neither Cheese, WxCam, not Camorama will show any output .....  various faults.

VLC seems to be trying ....  it 'plays' from the cam but there is no video ....  but at least it does not error out.

I can record the audio from the cam MIC and adjust the volume etc in Pulse Vol Control.
There the cam is noted as a QuickCam Messenger Plus

The info from VLC is as per pic.

It is causing me to wonder if the driver module is working correctly.
Is there anyone using this driver module successfully?
If yes what are the camera details please? .....  vendor:device numbers

The second webcam to try is again a Logitech using the same driver

Vendor: ‎Logitech, Inc.
Description: ‎Camera
Media class: ‎
Connection
Bus: ‎USB
Bus PCI #: ‎1
PCI device #: ‎9
Vendor ID: ‎0x046d
Device ID: ‎0x0870
Misc
Module: ‎STV06xx

VLC details again in pic

This time there is no audio in the Pulse Vol Control .....  no audio device for the input, although VLC seems to think otherwise ...

Only errors from the other cam video apps I tried.

The third cam I tried .....  a similar Logitech product .......

Vendor: ‎Logitech, Inc.
Description: ‎Camera
Media class: ‎
Connection
Bus: ‎USB
Bus PCI #: ‎1
PCI device #: ‎10
Vendor ID: ‎0x046d
Device ID: ‎0x0870
Misc
Module: ‎STV06xx

Again VLC seems to want to play it but I am getting no video.
No audio device in the Pulse Vol Control for this either.

What VLC sees in pic again

This one shows the MIC in the Pulse Vol Control .....  although the MIC would appear to be dead in this cam .....  which is a possibility given its age.

Cheese tried but no video. In terminal this error showed ......  libv4l2: error turning on stream: Input/output error

wxcam
Using video4linux 1 API
Determining palette format...
Found palette VIDEO_PALETTE_RGB24
VIDIOCMCAPTURE 1: Input/output error

In addition I have another Logitech
046d:0801

I have yet to find what the correct driver for that might be ....  if one exists now for it.

The last one I will mention is

Vendor: ‎Microdia
Description: ‎USB camera
Media class:
Connection
Bus: ‎USB
Bus PCI #: ‎1
PCI device #: ‎14
Vendor ID: ‎0x0c45
Device ID: ‎0x6005
Misc
Module: ‎sn9c102

That came straight out of an unopened box (Sweex Mini WebCam)
It is showing a very faded out pic in VLC, but I can see movement when waving my hand in front of the cam.
I suppose it may be just a dodgy webcam, but as I had problems with the others it may not be so.

I know there are some threads about Microdia on the forum but I have not accessed them yet.

Thanks.

Hello JohnBoy: I don't know if it will help, but I just purchased a Logitech 250 web cam to modify as an astrophotography camera and it worked fine with PCLos 2010. I also have an HP laptop that has an HP webcam and it also works, An Acer Aspire netbook with a webcam that works, I also have a pretty old Ezonics webcam that works and last a generic webcam that also works. So I just assumed that pretty much any webcam would work. Also all of these work with Cheese and wxCam. I haven't installed anything special from synaptic to get them to work. Sorry I can't be more help.
If Firefighters died and went to hell, they would just put it out!

O K  tell me how I check for that and I'll be glad to do it. I just thought they all ran under the V4L module.

PCC Control Centre - Hardware - Manage your hardware ....... highlight the webcam and copy/paste the right panel to next post ........  as I did above.
The driver module is the last item in the list, but I would appreciate the full list from the right pane.

Thanks.   ;)

There is the real difference that I am looking at.

If you have any webcams that are working in PCLOS 2010 that show this

Quote
Misc
Module: ‎STV06xx

I would really appreciate the info .........  I am presently unsure if the problem is at my end or if what I am seeing is a general problem with the STV06xx driver.

Heck, maybe I am the only one who has attempted to use a webcam with this driver   ???

Thanks for getting back to me.   ;)
