I have LXDE 2010 running quite happily from an 8Gb SD on my EeePC 701 except for one annoyance. Setting a User account to log in automagically, from Configure Computer>Login or from Configure Desktop, or both, the setting doesn't stick. I have autologin installed from the default repo. What am I missing, please? My /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf is correctly named and references both my User Account Name and autologin=enabled.

Thanks.

Not of much help but here is another talk about kwallet
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,76949.0.html

Could that be related to your problem?

You are not saying if you have searched Forum for example  :D

BJF,
In /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf, do you have these lines with a blank line to start?
Quote
[daemon]
AlwaysRestartServer=true
Browser=true
AutomaticLogin=username (substitute your name here)
AutomaticLoginEnable=true

[greeter]
GraphicalTheme=PCLXDE-GDM
GraphicalThemes=BlueScalesLXDE-GDM
GraphicalThemeRand=true

If your file is different, rename it to custom.conf.old and create a new custom.conf file with this info plus appropriate changes.

Next, check the permissions on the file. It should be readable by all and writable by owner.

wedgeling,
Kwallet is a KDE app. :)

No problem, wedgeling. That's the kind of thing that can happen to anyone -- except maybe Texstar and Old-Polack. :D

Neal: My custom.conf is this;

Blank Line
[daemon]
AlwaysRestartServer=true
Browser=true
AutomaticLogin=mdm
AutomaticLoginEnable=true

[greeter]
GraphicalTheme=PCLXDE-GDM
GraphicalThemes=BlueScalesLXDE-GDM
GraphicalThemeRand=true

I'll alter it as instructed. Watch this space.

Apropos Texstar and O-P: +1  :D

(EDIT) Now we go to a two-tone blue log-in screen with a pretty yellow daisy but essentially only the view has changed. What do I alter in custom.conf to get to the custom.conf.old login and thence through autologin-edly to my Desktop?

John.

Remove this line. I shouldn't have included it, as this theme has not yet been made available -- I need to tweak it a bit.
If that doesn't do it, run gdmconf.

Neal: Custom.conf is correct, my user name is correct in GDM Settings and the box is ticked, I appear as the logger-onner in Control Center with the LXDE Desktop as default, and I still get stopped by the Daisy Police and asked who am I. Any ideas, and should I still have the daisy in place of my old interrogation screen?

At the login screen, choose Configure > give root password > choose Local tab > uncheck Circles theme. Check to see if any other themes are checked. You want PCLXDE-GDM to be the only one checked.

Neal: Done. There are two LXDE-GDM choices and I have tried them both. I do have the old log-in screen back but it still asks. So unless it has a long time-out setting that I haven't been waiting for built in, the problem isn't solved.

In GDM Settings>General, Hide Visual Feedback is unticked, Disable Multiple Logins is ticked, Default session=Run Xclient script, and the 24 hour clock is used.
In GDM Settings>Local, Style is Themed with Face, and I have selected Theme=Selected only.

Those sound correct to me. Hmm...... more investigation is needed, I suppose. I'll get back to you as soon as I find out something.

Ok last time I checked... that is not the way one will autologin himself to lxde... KDE - yes but not to LXDE / XFCE or Gnome...

This is how it should be done to my best of knowledge...

Set lxde as default session in GDM and them follow the link above...

I use it for almost year now with different desktops like Gnome / LXDE / XFCE.

Hope this helps.

AndrzejL: Applied your suggestion and found myself at the GDM Configuration screen accessable from the Desktop, and with all the settings already in place. I admit to not overtyping them so can't say if a difference could be made as root by doing that.
The little LED in the back of my personal RAM took me to look at the LXDE 2009 install on the Eeep's SSD. Custom.conf on that install references /usr/share/GDM/defaults.conf so I pulled it up on 2010 for a look. It does not have Autologin enabled. It says don't mess with it, and that custom.conf should override it anyway.
All told, it seems to be a remarkably difficult feat to get a minor irritation out of the way.

BJF,
You said there were 2 listings for the PCLXDE-GDM theme? Test each of them to see what happens, please.
Open GDMconf, select the first in the list, select for autologin and reboot. Remember to be sure only one theme is checked. Does this one work? Was custom.conf changed? Now test the second entry in the same way. Does it work?

Based on your answers to this, we will come up with a way to fix this or to troubleshoot further, if necessary.
