Back to 10.10 Opera
« on: July 30, 2010, 03:16:21 AM »
Yesterday I updated the Opera to the new version 10.70. It was through Synaptic, together other packages.
I found much slower the new version of Opera than the previous one. Is there any way to back to 10.10?

I can't answer your question but maybe you could make very sure that opera is the culprit.  For me 10.7 is as fast as any version I used the last 2 years.

Where have you found Opera 10.70? I can't find it in the repos and I can't find it on the Opera website. I have been running 10.60 for a few weeks and I've found it extremely fast and a little bit buggy.

No it is there allright, I updated 2 days ago and there is only 10.70, there is only one Opera, then,  as I wanted to drop down for other reasons. And it is fast and faster when you knock out plugins. I am in XFCE struggling I will see when I get back in kde

Aaaaahhhhhhhh, good to be "home" again in KDE
When using Search take option Name only, don't use the default in Synaptic   ;D

longtom:
I changed the browser from Firefox to Opera after the fresh install of PCLOS 2010. I found it much quicker than FF.
Now, after update to version 10.70, Opera do not open pages so fast as it did before. I have to wait 3-5 seconds or more, before the page loaded and I can see the content of the page. It's annoying.

From repository, by Synaptic, of course.

24-26% of operapluginwrap, opera other 3-4% from CPU, when it idle.

First Opera 10.70 is a beta version in my opinion but close to final, it made it to repo extremely fast in my opinion. Anyway back to your problem.

Hit F12 button > approx middle of box then disable plugin and go back and use it for minute or two then check the top values again and post.   :D

Have you got gkrellm installed, you may consider this because Opera needs and eye kept on it. You will find it in Synaptic. A small program that default give you graphical view of activity.

Ah, forgot to say if you see dbus-daemon in top sitting at 12% (probably different value in your pc), aim straight for gkrellm and check your cpu load.  :o

I switched off plugins and opera remains at 3-4%.
But seems the speed hasn't changed.

I'll install gkrellm, thanks!

No dbus-daemon in Top, at least not in the top.

Its my understanding that in Opera you can't turn off IPV6 which MAY be the cause of the speed problems.

But I did just install 10.7 in VBox and it seems fine speedwise but as I'm not that I'm a big user of Opera I can't say whether it has slowed down or not, but as I say it seems okay on my system.

Time to tell us a bit about your hardware  ;D
What desktop are you running KDE GNOME etc, you are running pclos2010 ?
Have you done a comparison with Firefox how do you feel they compare.

I have other problems but to me this Opera version seems to be in the overtaking lane most of the time, until the radiator goes on the boil and scares me because I have twin engine system running 65% load and above when hardly any apllications. This problem seem to be related to plugins, that is why I asked you to turn it off. Back to you

If you don't know how to give details load a very small program called hardinfo, should be in Synaptic, it is a ripper, easy to generate reports, start with a summary and post this here.  If you don't understand ask again

menotu
It seems fine to start with, but keep and eye on cpu loading, if you have a monster machine you may not notice until steam comes out of the cover and the mouse pointer starts disappearing   ;D  So far I seem to have found out that the problem only exists when plugins are on since turning those off I have been running for hours without the problem showing up.  Almost invariably in my case dbus-dameon gets in a knot and will not go away until re-boot, sometimes logout/in will be enough.

General
Here is a refence to the topic where I leave details on the cpu load problem

Good - well, part good anyway  ;D

If you need your plugins you may want to add just one at a time to see if you can find the offending culprit.

I didn't changed previous version of Opera, and that was very fast. I only updated to the newest version of it.

If it was fast before and with plugins off I would expect that you would not notice any slowdown, but this is computers anything goes.  Are you running with turbo mode on then turn it off.

menotu
I am not a fan of plugins, but I suspected flash for quite while and I think it still may be but I could not prove it and also found it was not that easy to turn off. Opera site did have information and I would welcome anybody with experience in that. At the moment I am happy that my twin engines can rest in idle.   ;D

Have to do some stuffing in Klipper !

Have you done a comparison with Firefox how do you feel they compare.

The report from hardinfo:
Processor   Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Memory   2073MB (398MB used)
Operating System   PCLinuxOS
Display
Resolution   1280x1024 pixels
OpenGL Renderer   GeForce 6600 GT/AGP/SSE2
X11 Vendor   The X.Org Foundation
Multimedia
Audio Adapter   ICH4 - Intel ICH5

Now I compared Opera to FF and found both very slow.

Anyway, it seems no way back for me to Opera version 10.10, so I have to live with the new one and hope it will be updated someday for the one that suits my system.
Thanks for the help anyway.
