???
Not sure.

Have you logged off, and back on?  Tried rebooting?
Rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf (as root), perhaps to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.orig?  (For this one, you would also need to log out, and back in again, or reboot, to see if it worked...X should re-create the file if it's missing, if I recall correctly).

Could try renaming ~/.e/, your user's home directory, or creating a new, test user to see if the problem is global...

I have the same error when disabling compiz in e17 but here it's the below section of the screen instead of the left section.
Logging out and back in doesn't help, changing theme doesn't help, only re-enablng composite module brings back the rest of the screen.

Every windows machine has an un-patchable critical vulnerability... Its called "Power ON" switch.

Found some more:

Follow these steps:
1 Enable compiz, add itask-ng and set itask-ng transparency to zero (fully transparent)
2 Disable compiz: you'll get the black section on your screen due to itask-ng trying to use composite for it's transparency
3 Remove the itask-ng: everythng turns back to normal
4 Re-add itask-ng: the black section appears again.

When i first used the itask-ng it had no transparency option because i didn't have the composite module disabled, the ability to set it transparent only appeared after compiz was enabled so somehow itask-ng fails to detect compiz isn't enabled anymore.

Gonna look further into it, possibly it will be solved by disabling composite, removing itask-ng, (maybe disable/re-enable it in modules), clean up itask-ng config (if i can find it) and itask-ng this time without composite enabled.
I'll be back soon when the kids are in bed then i'll have time to try out some options and file a bug if i can track down what's going wrong.

Got some help in #e on Freenode irc:
settings-panel > advanced > engine , unselect enable composite and restart e

Now you can enable/disable the composite module without losing a part of your screen.
Btw you only need to enable this checkbox if you want to use e17 with another compositing manager. (not window manager)

ok smurfslover...
this is obviously a problem with the itask-ng.... coz i have my itask-ng bar situated on the left side of the screen... when i moved it to the lower border the black curtain went down and covered my lower portion of the screen....
i found also something...that when i tried the option of keeping the itask-ng bar above all that happens... but if i made it on desktop things appeared ok...
now i tried unchecking the enable composite and things are fine again...
so its obviously a itask-ng problem...
thx man
