Hi All, Done it again! Could not leave well enough alone. In configure your computer, Set Up How Your System Boots, i tried changing back to a different kernel which synaptic is showing as still installed on my system. However after reboot it cant find /lib/modules/2.6.32.12=pclos/bfs/modules.dev    It then goes on saying it cant find this and that(sorry cant remember it all) andgets to waiting, then system timeout, finally kernel panick! In pclos 2009 i found i could load the Live CD, LOG IN AS ROOT, mount the actual root partition on the hard drive and by chance found by double clicking, or right clicking, select "Run" something, must have been the actual script "Configure How your System Boots", i would get the actual settings as i had last set them, could see what i had done wrong, make the change, it would redo grub. I was sure i wrote down the name and location of the script in the root partition of the hard drive, but for the life of me i can not find it now! What a life saver it was to find its location. So does any one know the location of the script in root partition on pclos 2010 kde4? It will load to a basic desktop now but i can get no mouse movement at all. So if anyone can tell me the location of that script in the root partition, well you would really make my day!! and id be real grateful.
Thanks in advance people. Jeddaboy :)

I think the script you are after is redo-mbr  ..  There is also drakboot --boot which is what the original installer uses.

I'm not so sure either will fix your issues though, It sounds like X is not loading properly.  I recently had issues with mouse and keyboard failing to work after testing various kernels and had to manually define my mice & keyboard in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get them back (..they would work if I booted to init level 3 - no X)

Here is what I added:
Quote
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Keyboard1"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us"
    Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
EndSection

..and then modified the ServerLayout section to include the mouse and keyboard devices:
Quote
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout1"
    InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
    InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"

    Screen "screen1"
EndSection

Here's what I found;
not sure of the difference between /usr/bin & usr/sbin for drakboot.

/usr/sbin/redo-mbr

/usr/sbin/drakboot
/usr/bin/drakboot

Hope that is what you are looking for.  ;D

..you can run them from the liveCD; there is no need to run them from your install (or to chroot to your install).  ...they are found here:

/usr/sbin/redo-mbr
/usr/sbin/drakboot

..the /usr/bin/drakboot just runs the one in /usr/sbin but uses consolehelper to gain root privileges to do so.  you can use either.

Thanks heaps fella's for the info. Copied it to text and to external. very helpful indeed. This whole problem  came about because i, in a very silly move modified, set up how the system boots. redo grub in other words. I have quite a few kernels still installed. I downloaded and installed one of the newer kernels. In short my A8N-SLI Premium booted it but it was slower than the .a64's available. I had previously prettied up the Grub Graphical Boot Menu, removing older entries, but did not, through Synaptic remove any of the kernel iso's. So i knew they were still on the system. When i found that this later kernel was no good to this setup, i changed back to what i thought was the previous Kernel i had been using. I picked the wrong one, did not open up the advanced section and check what iso image was assigned to the entry. The one i chose, had no ISO assigned to it. That's where it all started, no fault of the system, only my not taking the time to check which ISO was assigned to what! So i suppose the moral of the lesson is, If you are going to change, the name of the entry, remove entry's from the menu, be sure you know it has a kernel assigned to it which is proven to boot properly and leave another, that you know boots fine on the graphical menu in case you get something wrong or the new one you try gives problems! I have learn t my lesson, fixed up all graphical screens on my machines and now have your guide as to how to get one back should something go wrong. Many thanks for all your help from all and sorry for the late reply fella's.I shall now mark it as solved. Thanks heaps, Jeddaboy.  :) :-[
