can't play audio cd [solved]
« on: July 25, 2010, 08:11:16 PM »
I have just installed PCLOS XFCE 2010.07 on an old Compaq deskpro PIII 600 with 512 Mb Ram.

It works beautifully so far except...I can't play audio cds.

When I insert a cd, the cd drive spins and the hard drive light flashes but nothing happens.

In the main menu I have Listen music player and Mixer. If I open Listen it appears not to be a CD player, just an audio file player. (?) I can't see any option to play CD.

In XFCE 4 settings manager under "removable drives and media" > "multimedia"  under Audio Cd the option "play audio cd when inserted" is selected, under that is "command" and a box, in the box it says "totem %d".

In synaptic it appears totem is not installed.

2 things:

1. I imagine this would be fixed by installing an audio CD player via synaptic, setting the audio cd setting to auto play the cd with whatever player I install. Is this right? any suggestions for an audio cd player that works well with xfce (& won't drag in heaps of Gnome or KDE stuff when installed) ?

2. Is this a "bug" or weakness with PCLOS XFCE 2010.07? It is a default install (I haven't tweaked anything) but it defaults to play audio cd's (and video cds and dvds) with a player which isn't included on the install CD? If so, should I report it somewhere?

thanks.

As to 2.  Not sure, but I remember also having a problem with audio cds before.  Can't remember what I did to fix it, so.  Sorry.

As to 1.  I downloaded and us exaile, which works very well for me.  It not only plays music cds but any music file on my rig, including hordes of radio and shoutcast stations.

Having said that, I normally rip my cd onto the hdd with Asunder as mp3s'.  I have it there for future reference and I will save some usage on the cd.

Whatever you do - good luck!

hi longtom
I have installed exaile and it looks good, but when I try to play an audio cd it comes up with a message that an audio cd plugin needs to be installed.

where do I get that from?

thanks.

found it...

exaile uses gstreamer backend so I searched gstreamer plugin in synaptic and there it was - gstreamer plugin for audio cd playback.

Now plays cds.

Thanks!
