Author Topic: [SOLVED] Is there a software to disable the touchpad on the laptop?  (Read 1660 times)

Hey there, I'm trying out the distro here and I can't seem to find a software to disable the touchpad on the laptop. Too often, when typing, the mouse goes crazy, clicking on whatever, and messing things up.

On one distro, they have "qsynaptics", but I guess on here, "synaptics" is some software package manager.

I don't mind what software I use, as long as it disables it.

Thank you.

Jeremy normally on the laptop itself there is a combination of keys that disable the touchpad. On mine that combination is the fn + F7 keys.  You may also be able to disable it with in the bios.  Another though is going into Synaptic and searching for the following packages

GSynaptics - is a setting tool for Synaptics touchpad driver.

Synaptiks - is a touchpad management service for KDE. It provides a simple
configuration interface and can automatically switch off your touchpad
on keyboard activity or if mouse devices are plugged.

If you search for "touchpad" it will pull up about 6 different packages.

Hope that this helps.

You might take a look at kcm_touchpad, synaptiks, touchfreeze and TouchpadToggle too?
Click on them in Synaptic and read the short description at the bottom window.

That's the one I use in Mandriva :)

Question, can I even install any packages? Right now, I am on the Live CD to see how I like this distro. I searched for synaptics, nothing. touchpad showed one x11.driver.input.synaptics. says it's installed, if i am reading it right.

The one I found is synaptiks.

You can install by Synaptic programs under LiveCD session as far as their installation size doesn't overflow your RAM.
Nothing is written on the HD during LiveCD session.

My search in Synaptic for you was on touch word.

Edit:
Here's what I have for Synaptiks:
--------------
Touchpad service for KDE 4
Synaptiks is a touchpad management service for KDE. It provides a simple
configuration interface and can automatically switch off your touchpad
on keyboard activity or if mouse devices are plugged.

Installation of PCLOS goes smoothly and very fast so why not give it a try?

There you will Reload in your Synaptic so the updates made since the .iso file was made will be included.

touchfreeze is the replacement for qsynaptics and ksynaptics.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

that's part of the reason. I tried the Live CD, looked nice. installed it and there was basically no desktop. I just want to be sure all is well again before I try it.

As for Synaptic, I tried searching for synaptiks, but nothing. Am I to assume I have to install it to get the packages?
I'd hate to damage Mandriva right now, and I am horrible with dual boots when it comes to two different Linux systems.
If all looks good, I will give it a go and install PCLinuxOS

I don't see touchfreeze either.
In a konsole, can you just type in the word or not? I know some distros are different, like going into root, some are su, some are sudo, i think some others.

I see dubigrasu is online.
As far as I know he (and some others here) is Mandriva and PCLOS user.

May be they'd help you better?

I don't need much help in Mandriva. I do have an account in their forums. For the most part, Mandriva is great, but at times, I like to see what else is out there.
Opensuse was nice I guess, but I ran into some trouble here and there.

the md5sum looks good. the previous copy I had of PCLinuxOS gave me that problem. so maybe this one is a good one.

It sounds like you have not reloaded the repository. Did you click on RELOAD first?

Sorry, when doing a search, i had the wrong thing listed. I see touchfreeze, and installed it. I ran it under konsole and got this:

[guest@localhost guest]$ touchfreeze
SynDaemon::SynDaemon

set daemon true
set pad true
using typing delay of 500 ms
"/usr/bin/synclient"
initial state is TouchpadOff= 0

So it seems installed w/o problem?

Look for it in System-->Configuration-->Hardware.

Or try to lainch by its name in Terminal.

I typed it in the konsole, as mentioned above, and I notice when I type, I see it say

start typing
stop typing

(repeat each time I type)

But the mouse still moves when I type, and stick clicks when I type.

I don't see a System -->Configuration-->Hardware, I see a More Applications-->Configuration.
