New lmms still crashes
« on: July 24, 2010, 08:16:06 AM »
I notice this morning that lmms had been updated in synaptic.  So I uninstalled lmms, and updated my system, then reinstalled lmms .  The error messages about tripleoscillator not being found are gone, lmms opens without any warnings, but the program still crashes when I try to open a midi file.  It starts loading, gets about 10-15% done and then just goes away.

Before someone asks:  Yes I checked the way the preferences are set up.   lmms preferences point to a soundfont (/usr/share/soundfonts/Unison.SF2) file that works beautifully with timidity.

how much processor and ram are you working with?

I have 1.8 GHz processor and 1G of ram and the visualization graphic for cpu master output (top center of lmms gui) runs at about 75% when I load a .mid file in lmms and play it.  I almost always use .wav files and many of the songs I create have upwards of 50 different .wav files which are often arranged such that there may be layers containing 10 or more .wav files being mixed and output at the same time i.e. vocals.wav, bass.wav, guitar1.wav, guitar2.wav, synth.wav, keyboard.wav, junopad.wav, drums.wav, percussion.wav, all at once.

So in contrast, rarely does the cpu master output visualization even show anything other than the wave line moving to the music and when it does show any cpu it is usually no more than about 10% but like I said, that's only when I have many files layered on top of each other being output all at same time.

Don't know how much this helps other than knowing that .mid files put heavy load on my system, but then I don't ever use them either.  Perhaps there is a utility in synaptic that will convert .mid to .wav for you?  If I find one I'll post back.

Peace

My desktop machine is an AMD dual core 4600+, and I have 2GB of memory.  So that wouldn't seem to be a problem if you're running with 1.8GHz and 1 GB.  Haven't looked at it if a few days.  Is there a config file that we might compare to see if we are set up the same?

Interesting, I happened to be on my laptop when I got the notification of your reply.  Since lmms wasn't installed here, I just opened synaptic, loaded lmms, pointed it at my soundfont file, and imported a midi file.   It played just fine.  Since this is an old dell with 1 GB of memory, my Desktop machine should be OK too.  I've got some more investigation to do.

Thanks for your reply, at least I know it SHOULD be working.

Weird,   it still crashes while trying to open the same midi file that would play on my laptop.  I can get the demos to play, and sound good.  This program may be a whole smarter than I am.

For what it's worth, LMMS has always been prone to crashing for as long as I can remember.
It's backend audio (particularly jACK) has never worked well in my experience. Shame really,
but it definitely needs more work....

"needs more work"

Definitely.   While I was playing with it on my Desktop machine trying to get it to work, I installed jack, qjackctl, ladspa, etc etc:   then suddenly my sound quit working completely, no notification sounds, no mp3 players, no audacity, nothing, quiet as a tomb.   Used control panels to reconfigure sound, etc etc, found nothing out of the ordinary, just what I expected to be there. Uninstalled all the stuff I put trying to make it work and gave up for a couple of days.  Sound still gone until several reboots later, sound came back.   I have no idea what happened, I wasn't doing anything to the system right before sound returned.

Since I was trying to get lmms to work, I think it was the problem, but not sure what it did to the system.

Sounds bad. I never had it take my whole sound down. Check to see if JACK is still running unexpectedly.
If so, kill it and see what sound works.
Have you checked out Qtractor and Jackbeat? They're not replacements but between them you could
probably meet your creative needs.
