(Solved) X server problem on bootup
« on: July 21, 2010, 06:12:37 PM »
Fresh install of zen mini, all updated, latest pae kernel, everything was working fine until i went to pcc and change the graphic server to nvidia 6100 (that is what i have on pclinux os 2010 kde on my other drive and it's working), then rebooted and got error message about Failed to start X server bla bla bla and cannot go further even if i say yes or no to what's on the screen, i'm ending up with kind of a login screen and it's doing nothing.

Now, what's next  ;D

I am back to Zen Mini, on bootup i went and configure back the x server using the options on screen, it seems that i disable the nvidia 6100 and i also change the resolution back to 1024 x 768. Now the nvidia is not working so the problem is to make it work. As mention before the card is working on PCLOS full monty that i have on my other hard drive which is my main system, maybe it's something that need to be added but i don't know that for now.

After installing the correct driver for your card you need to add vmalloc=256M to your grub boot line if using the latest kernel and/or latest zen-mini.

Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst as root

kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=0a3960fc-c35e-4bba-8424-bb3fe406d648 splash=silent vga=788  vmalloc=256M

It is on the KDE page right under the full version. Here's the download link.

I did change the video to nvidia 6100, didn't reboot, and added this to menu.lst: kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=0a3960fc-c35e-4bba-8424-bb3fe406d648 splash=silent vga=788  vmalloc=256M

Now i have this on bootup:

ZEN-mini release 2010.1 (PCLinuxOS) for i586
Kernel 2.6.33.6-pclos1.pae on a Dual-processor i686 /tty1
localhost login:

It doesn't go further than that.

While i was addind what Texstar give me to add i saw that in my menu.lst it it (hd0,6) rather than (hd0,0) so i don't know if that is making a difference but i can't access my pclos again  ;D lots of fun with it.....

Boot up using your Zenmini live cd or any other, then you can make your alterations to menu 1st file that way.

To see if
 title 2.6.33.6-pclos1.pae
kernel (hd0,0)/BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=0a3960fc-c35e-4bba-8424-bb3fe406d648 splash=silent vga788 vmalloc=256M was the problem, i changed (hd0,0) for (hd0,6) and put the lines back in the menu.lst and i still have localhost login: on bootup.

I also see that this: UUID=96b81b8e-d1da-4031-9bb2-0477ad03a338 resume=UUID=b51f95e5-7878-42d6-8e3f-6b85ef2aa340 is different from the one i added which is: UUID=0a3960fc-c35e-4bba-8424-bb3fe406d64  ???

I don't think you should have added this part of it UUID=0a3960fc-c35e-4bba-8424-bb3fe406d64
