What Would You Recommend For a New Comer ?
« on: July 21, 2010, 07:40:32 AM »
As a new comer who with the kind help of forum members is now up and running PCLinuxOS 2010 ( KED 4.4.5 ) , just looking at all the possible software I could install from the repository its a bit overwhelming . I know people have their own personal favourites when it comes to software they use, but as some one who until a few days ago never used PCLinuxOS , I am just wondering if you guy's here can comment on your top or most used items of software that you would recommend to a new comer like my self , I know its how long is a piece of string type question, but it would be nice to get an idea of what other forum members are using.

Note - I am just a normal type of user who likes to try a range of software  ;D

Thanks - William

That's fine....  but it would give us a hint if you'd let us know what you are interested in....

I'm on the mag staff so I use Scribus, Gimp, OpenOffice, Inkscape and Hugin - Gimp is a photo manipulation program similar to Photoshop. Scribus is the publishing program we use to typeset the articles. Inkscape is a graphics program that some of our best artists use to create their awesome wallpapers & themes.  Hugin is a program that will combine a series of overlapping pictures into a panorama. OpenOffice  is the office suite (naturally).

If you're into music and video.... someone else should give you their list.....

Welcome to Linux!  and welcome home to PCLinuxOS!

"...how long is a piece of string...?"

Yes, that is the kind of question you've asked. ;)

I would be willing to bet that for virtually any app in the repos, somebody here uses and swears by it.  Others may use it, but swear AT it.  And still others don't use it at all.

And, of course, it also depends on the desktop environment you use.  A Gnome user would probably have decidedly different favorites than a KDE user, for instance.

Still, some generalizations might be made.

OpenOffice is, arguably, the best office suite.
Firefox for web browsing.
The Gimp for image editing.
Digikam for photos.
VLC, Smplayer, and Dragon seem popular for watching videos.

Etc.

Hi williamb,

specifically for newcomers you could have a look the FullMonty edition. It contains all good tools for all kind of purposes grouped thematically. So there is no need to search for, know about, or install whatever specific application you may need.
good luck,

What programs did you use on your prior OS? Look for the progs that would fill those same needs. There are lots to choose from. I try different ones from time to time and stick with the one I like....:D
