That's music to my ears, even without having Mozart playing here.  ;D

Dolphin still crashes on occasion.  But that's a bug that's been around for awhile with this version of KDE4.  It'll clear when I do the 2010.7 upgrade.

And this entire experience should make the transition go much more smoothly. All I have to do is mount / and mount /home. then when installinig, do a reformat to / only.  /home files shouldremian intact. Then, when it comes up on reboot, create a new user with a unique UID and GID and join the markz and mark groups.  All my files should be accessible.)

I'm kinda excited about doing this.:)

Slow down a bit. When you reinstall with the 2010.7 release you'll only want one user again, with his own /home/<whatever> directory, not either the current mark nor markz directory. The new user should have the UID/GID of 500/500 to have full access to all your existing files and partitions. Using chown you can then have that user own both of the current /home/mark and /home/markz directories. If you want to be mark on the new install, the current mark directory should be renamed mark-old just before the new installation, from the liveCD. Then do the installation, and don't format the /home partition. Create the new user mark as the only normal user, after setting up the root password.

mark currently has UID/GID of 500.  don't I want o give it a completely different UID/GID? Perhaps something like 505?

Not on the new installation. You want to be you again, but with a new home directory that carries no baggage from the old installation. It's the old baggage that will cause problems; you want a totally fresh start, but you still want to own all the files and directories that currently exist in your personal data, wherever it's located. All of that is owned by 500/500 so that's who you want your new user to be.

mark-old will be 500/500
markz will be 502/502

mark (thenewinstal) wilbe 500/500.

am I not going to run into the same problem I just had with mark and mark-old both being 500/500?

Nope, because there will only be user mark, (the new one) with the /home/mark directory as his home (~). He will own /home/mark-old in the same manner as he owns all the data files and directories on all other partitions, without any attempt by the system to use that as the ~ directory. Using chown, as root, he can also own /home/markz in the same manner, after the installation is complete. This makes it easy to move personal files into the new /home/mark directory without permission problems. When all items are done being transferred, and all is to your liking, the remains of /home/mark-old and /home/markz can be safely deleted, leaving you with only /home/mark in the /home directory.

Chown will happen automatically on the new install then?
or do I need to issue "chown -R mark:mark /home/mark" afer I ceate mark?

You'll automatically own /home/mark, and /home/mark-old. You will not own /home/markz; that will be owned by a nonexistent 502/502. As root you will need to run  chown -R mark:mark /home/markz  to own it.

Because I'll automatically own mark, that means it will default to full ownership.  I shouldn't run into the sme problem I just had where tow accounts jhad the same UID/GID but ownership was confused, correct?

Just to exercise my wits on this... In doing the new install, I decided to start off with a completely new user, UID/GID.  Let's call it karl with UID/GID 505.

Now, it would only have ownership of karl. Nothing else, correct?  I would have to join groups mark-old and markz in order to gain access to the files.  I wouldn't have to issue a chown because of different  GID/UIDs from mark-old and markz.

Totally unnecessary. If you did create user karl, he would own none of your personal data, only his own home. He could not join group mark and markz because those users would not exist on the new system. Creating them would only create unnecessary complication, which is what we're trying to avoid. As complication goes up, so does the chance of error.

By creating only one user, mark, with UID/GID 500/500 mark would be created to own all your present data from the start, nothing else needed. User mark will have /home/mark as his ~ directory, and will try to use no other. Things will be, for all practical matters just as they were on your old installation, before you started messing around.

The only thing different will be that some of your personal data will be in the /home/mark-old directory. You will have full access to it, but the obvious thing to do is move it to the new /home/mark directory. Your present firefox settings and bookmarks will exist in /home/mark-old/.mozilla. If you copy that to /home/mark/.mozilla before opening the newly installed firefox, when you first open it, all you settings, extensions, and bookmarks will already be in place; no first time use setup required. The same for each other application that has a ~/.<directory>

Your new amarok installation will be different from the old, so there's no need to save any of the old amarok files. The new ones will be proper for the new version installed. You will not want to save any of the old KDE files, except some individual unique contact type items. When I did my 2010 release installations, I moved nothing from the old KDE files except my contacts.

I think I may do an upgrade install this week.  Maybe even tonight.  It depends on how much time I have and how quickly I can get things up and running.

To review the steps:

1.) In the current install, in PCC, change the user from "mark" to "markold"
2.) Run the Live CD (2010.7), and install.  Make sure to mount "/" and "/home." Format "/" only!
3.) On reboot, create the user mark at UID/GID 500:500.  This will give me access and ownership to markold.
4.) In Terminal, run "chown -R mark:mark: /home/markz"  This gives me ownnership of markz files.
5.) Move files from markold and markz to mark.
6.) Delete user account markold via PCC.

Okay, so it's just clicking on the folder and deleting.:)

BTW, on the new install, the default UID/GID wil be 500, correct?  I won't need to manually name this.

Okay, thanks.:)  The reason why I asked is because when I created markz this last time around, I only saw a place to override the UID.  I couldn't find the GID manual setting.
