(SOLVED. THANK YOU!) No sound. Amarok hangs
« on: July 20, 2010, 05:56:54 PM »
On log-in, no introductory sounds play.  Launching Amarok, it just hangs.

In konsole, i get this:

[mark@MARKD ~]$ amarok
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
<unknown program name>(5379)/: Communication problem with  "amarok" , it probably crashed.
Error message was:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

i get this message when all programs are launched.for instance, XMMS gives me:

[mark@MARKD ~]$ xmms
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".

But it come up and plays.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I get this when I start xmms from a terminal;

I used to get what you show, before doing a complete upgrade. Are you fully upgraded? Are you using the KDE4 release, or the old KDE3 release?

I haven't done the upgrade yet. Still running KDE 4 from that first jump up from KDE 3.5.

thi just started this evening.  Could it be one of my hard drives? I know bay three hangs a it.  Bay four works flawlessly. I switched and pulled the drive. Amarok still not running, but one of the programs that didn't play sound is now playing sound. Still no intro music on log-in.

If it's been working up until now, the first thing I would try is an fsck -f of the / partition, from the liveCD, as root. It could be an inode with a bone stuck in it's throat. ;D

This is a rack ssytem. when I first log-in,noneof the partitions are mounted.  I have to manualy mount them, simply by clicking on them in Dolphin. At least, I assume they are not mounted.

If this is the case, I can run fsck from my regular install, correct?

If it's the installed application having the problem, it's in the / partition of the running system, so needs to have the fsck run from a different system while unmounted. You can't unmount a / partition on a running system, so you either need a second installation, or the liveCD to do the filesystem check.

Gotcha. We need to fsk the hard drive that PCLinuxOS resides on.:) tht's probbly where the problem is.

Okay, in the Live CD now. In Guest account, booted Konsole, issued "SU' to get to root.

Here's what I got:

[guest@localhost guest]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost guest]# fsck -f /dev/sda1
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16.2
e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
Pass 4: Checking reference counts
Pass 5: Checking group summary information
/dev/sda1: 221939/5210112 files (0.5% non-contiguous), 2194784/20838305 blocks
[root@localhost guest]#

My files are on /home.  Do I need to fsck this, as well?

I checked synaptic. I thought if I uninstaled amrok, perhaps this would clear th problem. when I wen to uninstall, it asked me to also uninstall task-kde4-extra. This is needed for Kaffeine, Amarok, Digikam, etc.

Well, all these programs are hanging.  Maybe task-kde4-extra needs to be removed and reinstalled?

EDIT -- Just did it. No help.  uninstalled and reinstalled. Amarok still hangs and refuses to boot.

Just don't know what's wrong.  I may have to do the upgrade.  Question:  I have / on sda1 and /home on sda5.

When i do the upgrade, I should just select partition sda1 and make the mount point "/."  This will wipe the old PCLinuxOS off the / partition and format and install PCLinuxOS 2010.7. It will leave my/home directory alone and all my files intact. When I reboot, /home should be there.

Or do I need to make the mount point for sda5 as /home before I install the OS to sda1?

Backup your data first! Your assumptions are correct. After booting the live CD, start the install. Select custom partitioning. Point the root partition to sda1 and the home partition to sda5. DO NOT format your home partition. Then proceed from there.

Here's the thing. You may end up with some "lint" in your home directory, in the form of hidden configuration files and hidden application configuration and data folders. For example, you may want to preserve your .mozilla folder (Firefox) by unhiding and renaming it. Not knowing what apps you have installed, you'll have to make the call on what to keep copies of.

My data is all backed up...at least the important stuff. Still, if there's a fix for mycurrent situation without having to do a new install, I'd like to give this a shot as I have a bit of work to take care of first.
