(Solved) Synaptic can't Reload
« on: July 14, 2010, 04:01:04 PM »
I have 2 error messages when i try to Reload synaptic

1- The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

2- E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (2 No such file or directory)

E: Unable to lock the list directory

Right now i can not Reload and i'm looking for a solution. I must say that i deleted some files in order to use mylivecd, files in /var and files in /tmp both in /root following instructions from someone because i was not able to burn a copy of my perfectly right system so maybe the problems starts from there.....

Are you sure that you didn't remove a folder from the /var directory that you shouldn't of?

Good thinking, YouCanToo!

OrdiDoc,
When you removed the pkgcache files in /var/cache/apt did you remove the archives folder, too? If so, go to /var/cache/apt, right click in the directory and choose New > Folder. Name it archives. (all lower case characters) Next, right click it and choose Properties; click the permissions tab and make sure that the execute boxes are checked.

Do the same for the partial folder in /var/lib/apt/lists, if you deleted it.

thanks  ::)  the (2 No such file or directory) gave me the idea.  Probably best not to be removing files from the /var directory

Removing the files is fine. I do it for every remaster I make. It is the folders that can't be removed.

In the /var/lists/apt there is no lists and no partial

Copy of sources.list

# Package repository URL's

# Signed repositories have a [<key>] where <key> is the name of the key
# as it appears in vendors.list. If you remove it, no digital signature check
# will be made.

OrdiDoc,
"partial" is a folder - an important one. You should never delete it. Deleting the files is fine but never that folder.

To fix this, open /var/lib/apt/lists in your file manager, as root. Right click in the directory (inside the file manager, that is) and choose New > Folder from the right click menu. Name it partial. - Important! It must be all lower case characters. - Next, right click the partial folder and choose Properties; click the permissions tab and make sure that all of the execute boxes and the read boxes are checked.

Did you check for the archives folder in /var/cache/apt?

Note: When deleting files is advised, do not delete folders with them! Never delete a Folder unless you are specifically advised to do so and even then request confirmation.

Thanks Neal, i probably deleted some important files when i removed some of them in order to use mylivecd so i'm back and running because i reinstalled everything. I'm now able to use synaptic, i have the latest pae kernel, all my programs are back and the updates are done.

Thanks for your time, i will be careful with what i do but i think i'm going to backup some files from the root folders just to make sure because i play with my system a lot  ;D ;D

OrdiDoc,
Please remember, a folder (also called a directory) is not a file. Likewise, a file is not a folder. See the attached screenshot. The folder named "partial" is circled in red. Note the difference between its icon and the icons for the files.
Deleting system folders is not a good idea; this will cause problems, if you do. You should never do so, unless advised by someone you trust and only after confirmation.

If you are advised to delete files, be certain that you delete only the files you are advised to delete.

Working with system files and folders is dangerous. You can seriously damage your system, if you do not use extreme caution.

Neal i know that but i probably did it by trying to follow instructions from that thread: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,75742.0.html

I was using konsole to remove locked files and folders in order to proceed with mylivecd with succeeded eventually. I believe that it's me using the konsole that created the problem, i was not use to it. I always have a backup of my important files and folders so reinstalling was not a problem and that's what i did and everything is working beautifully.

Thanks again for your time, the support here is more than great, on that subject i was reading a thread about pclinuxos saying that the support that we have here is more than we can expect. I've been using forums since a long time and in some places they don't spoonfeed you but here you always find what you're looking for and it's important for people that don't know Linux. I believe that in order to have more people using the system it's really important that the support is more than great so the people that want to change to pclinux can do it and feel comfortable asking questions. I'm still considering myself as a newbie whit Linux so i'll be back (famous word from a famous movie).

Keep the good work guys  8)

I had advised you in that thread to use your file manager. Had you done so, you would have seen the difference between the files and the folder.

But you were not advised to remove any folders. Please re-read that thread. I specifically said files.

Some tasks are quicker by terminal/konsole, but unless you know exactly what is there, and what needs to be done with it, you should use a GUI application. It is a lot safer.
