Live USB randomly reboots
« on: July 12, 2010, 09:13:42 AM »
I recently created a liveusb with persistence using 2010.7 It seemed ok  but it has been randomly going to a black screen then briefly some wording shows for like a second. Then it brings me to a login screen with root and guest. I log back in as guest and it seems to work again. I am still connected to internet and even my firefox pages come back up. It works fine in all respects except for that problem.

It has happened quite a few times now and I have kept track of what I was doing so I might be able to troubleshoot it.
It happens doing all sorts of things. I can be online or offline.

Anyone have a similar problem that has a solution?

Thank you in advance for your help.
Joe

Happens to me when I hit the number 2 but it only happens once then it's ok.  Now I just hit the 2 first and log back in.

I thought that maybe I hit a combination of a key or two when I am typing fast. And that is what does it, but haven't been able to find out what I did. I just hit number 2 and it did nothing. I guess that isn't my bad key. I will keep experimenting.

So you  just adapted. As long as it works :D

Thanks

Does it do this if you do not use Persistence?

It does it with or without persistence. It doesn't seem to be  a random key stroke. I really don't know what it is. I do know it keeps doing it. I wish it was just hitting a key and getting it over with . Then going about my business with that out of the way. I could live with that.

This is new to 2010.07 it seems ....  from what you say.
Did you see anything like this previously?

I would be inclined to check the powersaving and other such options ..... other than that I cannot imagine what it might be .......   but of course if it happens while typing/mousing then it should not be the powersaving either ......

Strange ....

Is there any chance of you trying this ISO on another USB stick? .....  just in case .....  as you had trouble getting that one started I think .....

It did not do

How about that. See those 4 words above. It happened in the middle of that sentence. How strange. What I was about to say was that it did not do it with 2010.1

Well you make a good point about the usb stick and or the iso. I did have a problem to start.

However, I do doubt that a faulty usb would make this reboot. Not something I think could happen.

The iso as well. I downloaded it twice and MD5 checked out both times. I might save my home directory and try making a new usb live. Not sure what I want to do at this point. It is annoying though.
I will give this some thought.

Thank you.

There are a limited number of things to blame for this behaviour ....

1.   some combination/s of keystrokes

2.   problem with the ISO or the settings in the live OS

3.   problem with the USB stick

You know it did not happen with a different ISO on a different stick.
So you have choices to try to eliminate some of the possibilities ....

does the 2010.07 go wrong on another stick?  If yes then likely not the fault of the stick

does it go wrong if just left there doing nothing?  If yes then unlikely to be a key combo

So that case would point to the ISO I guess .........  but you would need to check out those situations first to be sure.

regards.

I will try all of that when I get a chance. If no one else is having this problem then of course it must be me. Either the bad stick or iso. I'll let you know when I do.

Thanks again for the advice.

I have not been using the stick for lengths of time .....  only to install from or demonstrate .....  so I have no idea if the problem exists here or not.

That Joble has something similar might indicate it ain't you babe !   ;D

I just tried an experiment.

For the first time I actually had some thing to go by to test what might be happening. The words I typed "It did not do"
I shutdown the computer and then booted up fresh. Then I came here and typed "It did not do" about 50 times. I wrote it then deleted it then wrote it etc.
Nothing happened. It was worth a shot to see if it was keystrokes. Nothing comes easy. :(

Well, maybe it is something that will be discovered and fixed. I will keep using this to gather more information. Then pass it on in hopes it will trigger a fix from someone much more knowledgeable than I. :)

I spent some time today messing with OpenBox latest on USB stick.

I was editing the fstab file to hold a mount point for

/dev/sdb2 ........ and BOOM!   back to the log in page .......  and the file I was working on had disappeared .....

So I can confirm the log out and in problem .......

Well, I guess we have a problem. It has happened many times since the last time I posted. I keep trying to find some correlation between what I am doing at the time and the reboot but to no avail. It is really getting annoying and losing what you are working on sucks too.

It happened as recent as about 30 minutes ago. It almost always happens when I am typing something so you might think it is certain keystrokes. Sometimes typing fast we all hit 2 keys at once. Who knows that might be the trigger. Just a random  2 key hit.
However, on the last reboot I do remember hitting the number 2 and believe I did hit another key in that area at the same time. Can't be sure because I can't recreate it.

Hope someone figures it out soon.
Thanks again.
