that looks like a hard disk error or a partial update

from that command line you can call synaptic and verify if you have some packages not installed

also you could run fsck but i don't remember the command, you could do a search on the forum for the exact usage

I went ahead and re-installed once more.  But this time it was with the 2010.7 disk instead of the earlier.

Full update went fine.  Granted, it only downloaded 15 packages, but still.

How long has it been since you updated your system? Have you been following along updating to KDE 4.4.4 then to 4.4.5 etc... or did you install 2010.1 then wait and do a 500 mb plus update all at once? It is recommended to use 2010.07 now as it has all of the updates when doing a new install.
