I have this same issue at times. It even does the bit about showing ethernet as not connected, despite the fact I was setting up wireless. The solution seems to be to go out and reboot the router, then the wireless is detected and picks right up, but it shouldn't be necessary. Mandriva seems to share this issue, tho that's not surprising, they share enough else in common.
Bloody frustrating it is.
