upgrading e17
« on: July 09, 2010, 05:40:47 AM »
Any advice gratefully received on upgrading E17.

I have PCLOS e17 installed on an old tosh laptop, and it works very well.  I noticed the announcement re upgraded packages ( and the caution about experimental) and gave it a try. Marked a lot for upgrade including the e17 stuff and lost a good chunk of the desktop.

Reinstalled the whole thing, and tried to upgrade again with only the e17 packages. This time trying to make a shelf causes a crash.

Back to a clean install and when I select e as the package to install the following are marked for removal.
elicit enhance entrance epsilon esmart estickies etk eel exalt exhibit exml expedite

Is this correct?, according to their descriptions some of these are required for e17.

Next. Which repo to use, At the moment  I have left it as default http://distro.ibiblio.org..... First time round I was using a geographically closer mirror and got errors on missing packages.  Lots on that repo list in synaptic but which one?

hello and welcome to the forum!

ideally you shouldn't use ibiblio as repo, last time i heard this one is the main repo from all the other repos synchronize so it shouldn't receive extra load from users

a good option is indiana, pclosuser and depending where you are other options in europe(can't remember names)

if you are using the latest iso for e17 and you are updating from repos you shouldn't have problems

can you give us a more precise explanation of what is the problem and some system specs on that laptop?

i don't understand why you are removing all those e17 apps, some could have dependencies problems and leave you with no desktop at all

Yes E-17 just went through a major change and all off those libs are depreciated. In addition the deskyop config files had to be reset on updating because they were no longer compatible. That is why the desktop will revert to a default setting. Finally E-17 developers have stated that it is under heavy development and not considered a stable release. We provide the desktop upon user request. We have been updating from their svn snapshots as they announce them bringing bug fixes along the way. An updated ISO is coming soon with all of the new libs.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Thanks Texstar, that explains all.
I've started making disk images so if I break anything its only 5 mins to revert, although I might just wait for that updated iso and start again. I do realise it is all a bit experimental but so far of all the light DM's I have tried I think it is the best.
