your problem is not reproducible and this could meant it is locally caused. Can you change to another repository in synaptic and then click refresh to update package list and then update your system again?. Maybe you updated when the packages where not fully synced and you end up with mixed version of packages.

I tried that, but no change.
But Texstar message led me to investigate on some residual files that could cause the problem and I noticed that I had 3 cd xulrunner folders in /usr/lib. Is that normal ?
ls /usr/lib/xul* :
/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.2:
plugins/

/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.2.3:
plugins/

/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.2.6:
chrome/             dictionaries/  libjavaxpcomglue.so*  libxul.so*               plugin-container*  run-mozilla.sh*
components/         greprefs/      libmozjs.so*          modules/                 plugins/           xulrunner*
defaults/           icons/         libsqlite3.so*        mozilla-xremote-client*  regxpcom*          xulrunner-bin*
dependentlibs.list  javaxpcom.jar  libxpcom.so*          platform.ini             res/               xulrunner-stub*

Check in Synaptic to see if you have multiple copies of xulrunner installed.

Those three directories are normal. At least, I have them.

Thanks again all of you for trying to help me.
I think I'm getting closer to a solution.
Using strace, I noticed that firefox complains about not finding a whole lot of libraries (libxcb-atom.so.1, libxcb-event.so.1...) in /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.2.6 while they are in /usr/lib.
There must be some wrong library PATH somewhere, but I don't know where.
Anyone has an idea ?

It could save a lot of time simply reinstalling pclinuxos and then do a full update right after you install. The problem you are having show up mostly to people who are not fully updated and have incompatible versions of libraries.

Have you tried opening a terminal, su-ing to root and then using the command "ldconfig"? Just a thought.

I'm beginning to think about it, though I'd like to avoid it since I have to do a lot of configuration work after install (4 different network profiles, samba shares, printers, etc.). I did a full update, so I guess I should not have incompatible versions of libraries, unless there is some bug in the packages dependencies or in the update process.

As you suggested, muungwana, I finally reinstalled PCLinuxOS from 2010.7 ISO, it took me some time but it was worth it, now firefox works fine !
Thanks again to all of you, it was my first post to the PCLinuxOS forum, I've been very happily surprised with so many people trying to help me. One more reason to stick with that great distro, the most user friendly I've never tried.
Regards,
Denis

I don't think this is a DVD or LiveCD problem. Firefox used to work until I did a full upgrade of my system (I should have said it before, sorry).
