Ralink wireless USB instalation problem
« on: July 08, 2010, 07:40:44 PM »
I bought a Ralink wireless USB and installed it on a HP desktop with an AMD 2600 CPU, PCLinuxOS 2010. It appears to work, the computer sees the USB and the network, but Firefox cant find the server.  I get the following error's:

[david@wilsondist ~]$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: nVidia Corporation nForce2 IGP2 (rev a2)

[david@wilsondist ~]$ lsusb
bash: lsusb: command not found
[david@wilsondist ~]$ iwconfig
bash: iwconfig: command not found
[david@wilsondist ~]$

Under browse hardware, shows:
ethernet card
    nforce2 Ethernet controller
    802.11n WLAN

config tool shows wlan0: Ralink 802.11n WLAN
next shows my network: wilsondist
next shows managed, wpa2, and my encryption key, all correctly
then automatic and host name wilsondist
I have all boxes checked under connection control,
checked yes under connect now,
and got the following error msg:
Problems occured during the network connectivity test.

This can be caused by invalid network configuration, or problems with your modem or router.

You might want to relaunch the configuration to verify the connection settings.

If I go into the control center as superuser, it shows wired ethernet, nvidia nforce ethernet controler
also wireless wifi, Ralink 802.11 WLAN, then my network with 3to 4 bars of signal strength, a lock symbol, and managed
monitor and connect shows signal of 273 B/s send, 2.4 KB/s receive, then after a short time I get:ERROR(as superuser), connection failed.

IPV6 is disabled (My other computers show IPV4 and IPV6, with the 6 disconnected)

I've tried allowing IPV4 and 6 tunneling, no luck.

Any suggestions what to try next?

I find the above rather odd ........  what version of PCLOS have you installed?

In the Network Center do you have an icon of twin monitors with a tick on them, showing a connection made? That would be for you wireless connection? Just to the left of the SSID.

Since I set my router to broadcast the SSID I have had few problems with wireless.

If anyone saw my previous post, I removed it because I failed to realize that the OP was referring to a USB device.

My bad. Sorry  ;)

??? That's strange. Go to PCC and delete all connections. Reboot. Konsole:

Have removed ethernet and wireless and reinstalled, no luck.  It still sees the network and reports packets passed back and forth, but when I click on Firefox, it cant find server.  I have a mini disk with a linux driver on it, but am new to this and don't know how to get from the card board box icon to an installed driver.

First I see the same here with a ralink pci card (rt2500). Connects but no flow of data. Duno how to solve this for .... lack of interest ( ;D ). I got it working with a USB adapter from Edimax (which company has excellent Linux support btw).
But ... in your case you might check Firefox (Edit > Preferences > Network > Settings > and check there "Auto detection proxy for this network".
That has worked for me sometime in the past.
