VHS to computer?
« on: July 07, 2010, 10:02:34 AM »
I shot some video on an old VHS video camera this past weekend.  I'd like to transfer to my PCLinuxOS computer.

I found this solution:  http://store.hauppauge.com/hardware2.asp?product=usblive2

Windows only, I'm afraid.

Is there a way to get this VHS footage into my PCLinuxOS system?  Video Capture card, perhaps?

Toonfully,

Mark

i was doing a search about this model but all i could find was a mention to the previous model working with v4l so no idea if it will work properly but possibly(hopefully) it will

i have a very cheap tv card, it works very well in linux including the video in connector, the sound foes to line in on the sound card

all you need is a app that captures the image, i never done this on linux so no idea which one can do it but afik there is many that can do it

all you need to do is know the port and set the app to capture from that port

remember that no matter the quality of cables or tv card/capture card, the original quality of vhs is usually crap, at best at 512x384 but very compressed and many colors very weird wit lots of noise

after you capture the video you will need to edit the video to crop, remove possible damaged borders and correct brightness, contrast, colors and other nice tricks that avidemux can offer between other apps

Hello Mark: I can tell you how I have done in the past. I put the vhs tape into a vhs player and then plugged in my analog audio/video cable into the back of the vhs player and plugged the other end into my digital video camera and copied the vhs tape to my digital tape and then took the digital video camera and plugged it into my firewire and copied it with Kino. There are also some RCA audio/video plug to usb 2.0 converters. I have one of those also but choose to use the digital video instead. I to also have a TV card with audio/video input, but as you stated it only works with windows.hope this helps. Here is the dazzle attachment, it may still be available on ebay.

I just found this article:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/5817

It's from 2002, but much of the info probably still applies.:) I'm gonna continue reading.:)

Sounds good, when you get to the editing part, try OpenShot video editor, it is in the synaptic repos and is a fantastic piece of software. google/linux his website and look at some of his samples.

I have a friend who's purchased a Hauppauge 1600, and plans to dump VHS tapes through the coax (kids movies to DVD for the cottage, so quality isn't paramount).
I've written this (as yet untested) script for him.  You're welcome to look through it...

(I added the ".txt" extension to the filename to get it to upload...)

Any video capture card, such as Hauppauge, that uses the bttv chipsets should work with Linux. You can also get USB capture devices for AV. There are many options. Google them.
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.
