Problem with connection
« on: July 07, 2010, 03:46:27 AM »
Hello.

Firstly, I must say that PCLinuxOS is the only distro which detects my wifi connection without Ndiswrapper, but natively. HURRAH!

But, I have a problem. When I write my wep key and try to connect to internet, a message appears: "Connection failed". After that I don't need more to write the wep key, but it doesn't want to connect. So, the problem is not with the key.

Do I need any file or something? My USB wifi is a Conceptronic n150ru.

Thanks.

I`m not familliar with wireless networking, but you can check the Network Center and set your password.

Yes, I did that before, when I posted my first message.

Here you see my available wifi connections.

Here you see my settings. I've selected operating mode "managed", encryption mode "open wep", and I don't remember more settings.

And finally, a message error about a network that I don't use, because I've selected wlan0.

I don't understand anything ???

Try this..
Configure Your Computer -> Network & Internet -> Remove a connection
Remove the 'eth0' connection first. Click 'Next' then 'Ok'. Then go back into 'Remove a connection' and remove 'wlan0'.
Make sure you have removed all network interfaces until it says you have nothing configured.
Reboot and go back to 'Network & Internet'. Now choose 'Setup a new network interface'.
Choose 'Wireless' and click 'Next' and continue on with the connection process.

Could you not use WPA instead of WEP, WEP is supposedly pretty weak even with a decent password.

WEP is broken by design and can be hacked in a matter of minutes with minimum effor regardless with what you do.

If you can, use WPA and use a unique Access Point name and a strong password. WPA has its flaws but the above two actions on your part will make it practically impossible to crack it.

pclinuxos wireless connection management  tools gives me the same error you are getting and i use instead "network manager" to connect to the wireless access point.

networkmanager is a daemon and is controlled by desktop dependent application like nm-applet for gnome and knetworkmanager for kde. You will have to install gnome if you want to connect using networkmanager since knetworkmanager is currently not in the repository

So you're connecting on your neighbors access point? Anyway, the picture is showing ethernet [eth0] connection??

Firstly, I've removed both access points, rebooted my PC, and added the wifi access point. Nothing.

Secondly, the key of my router is wep. If I write wpa key, maybe that doesn't work.

And thirdly, I'm downloading PCLinuxOS 2010.07 with Gnome, to use networkmanager. I'll try with it tomorrow. In fact, today I've installed PCLinuxOS 2010.01 with KDE.

Thanks :)

Is your wifi router set up for WPA/WPA2? Open PCC and delete all of your previous connections. Connect your pc/lappy via lan cable to your router. Open Firefox and type the router's address. Go to settings and make the necessary adjustments. Reboot. Again PCC and try to connect.

Personally, I would set up the router w/o encryption. The same goes with setting up the network via PCC. Your choice.

It doesnt matter if the router supports N or not, since if its a G router, if the router doesnt support N then the network adapter will fall back to Wireless G.

Secondly, you should use WPA encryption instead since with WEP, anyone who knows how to work aircrack-ng can decrypt your network key.

It sometimes happens where you might be trying to connect with an alphanumeric password (ie: angelfeather) and the password field expects its hexidecimal equivalent (ie: 616E67656C66656174686572) but that doesnt seem to be the case for your network.

Thirdly, you could always investigate using the command line. For example by opening the root terminal and posting the contents of the command
Code: [Select]
ifconfig
If you are using wlan0 as your wireless adapter, you might try something like this to try to bring it online.
Code: [Select]
ifconfig wlan0 up
Thats all I have for now.

Well, my Intel's N supported wifi card didn't want to work with wifi G Linksys router [Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (01/01/09) std]. After rebooting the router twice, it started to work.
