2010 firefox causes system to crash.
« on: July 05, 2010, 01:54:46 PM »
I've been using pclos for a while now. I have 2009 installed and everything works great. I tried the 2010.2 live cd, and everytime I load firefox my pc goes to a white screen with about 6 or so vertical lines. And the pc becomes non-responsive. The caps lock key won't turn the indicator LED on at the keyboard. Its dead. I rebooted and repeated this twice.

I used konqueror from the 2010 cd and it was working.

I'm able to navigate around but whenever I launch firefox, it croaks. Any ideas?

it appears to work in safe mode.

How does that work for installing pclos? Is there something special I will have to do during or after the install?

OK, since Firefox works fine in safe mode, it appears to be a video driver issue. What doesn't make sense is why the problem only exists with Firefox, unless it's flash-related. But if I remember correctly, Firefox defaults to the local PCLOS Welcome page on the live CD.

Is this the only video chipset you are using? : Biostar Geforce6100-M9 nVidia Socket 939 Motherboad  Mfg Part No!: Geforce6100-M9

Try the live CD again in VESA mode and post the results.

Hi.

I tried the vesa mode. Same thing. "White screen of death!" from firefox. I don't even see it come up. I see the icon at the bottom panel, then it dies.

I went back to safe mode, and I'm posting from firefox now within safe mode. Yes pclos is default. Also, the flash player is working in safe mode. I went to http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/action/

Yes, the only video is this on-board video of my Geforce6100-M9.

Well, I don't know squat about that chipset, except it's embedded in the motherboard. But, I did a little checking, and user davexnet was having smplayer issues, and his signature says AMD64 x2 4200; 2 GB Ram; EVGA 8600GT; Biostar Geforce6100 M9 MB. You may be able to gather some useful information from his post last month here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=74268.0

Wish I could be more help.

Thanks for trying dj. I've tried my disc on two other pc's and they are working with firefox. I don't understand why firefox works perfect with 2009 pclinux but not the 2010 pclinux. This is on the same pc with the same hardware.

So how does this work, if I install 2010 pclos? If I install in safe mode where firefox is working, will it work after the install is complete and I boot normally from the harddrive or will it revert back?

Dumb question: Can I install programs while using the livecd? Will they go away after I reboot? Lets say I wanted to play around with video drivers or something like that.

I have a computer with the same motherboard and cpu.. I have no problems with pclos 2010
or pclos 2009.....
The best way to save face is keep the bottom half shut.

I have 0 problems with 2009 as well. And its only firefox, which is the wierd part. I would think if its a video driver issue than konqueror would not have worked, but it does.

Well I decided to install 2010 and do the upgrades to see if it would fix the problem. The answer is no. My pc will crash when running firefox; the same thing it did with the live cd.  I'm posting from konqueror now within 2010.

 ??? >:(

Mozilla thunderbird does the same thing. This is kind of a bummer, because I backed all my email up for thunderbird. Now I can't open it.

This has something to do with Mozilla since Thunderbird and Firefox aren't working in 2010 but both worked in 2009.

Should this thread get moved to HD install/Software now, since it doesn't work after I installed it as well?

Playing around, I adjusted my display resolution to 800x600. It got me a little further into firefox. I saw the pclos homepage load, then I get an error:

Code: [Select]
ASSERT: node must have _DOMElement set
Stack Trace:
0:TV_V_nodeIconChanged([object ResultNodeClassInfo])

When I hit ok, I get white screen of death!

I tried again with Thunderbird, but it doesn't give me an error. It loads then a few seconds later, white screen.

Does this error mean anything to anyone?

O'yeh, I'm running from my installed system now. Same issue.

Mods,
Can you move this to the SW section since it happens from the cd and my install? More people watch that section than the livecd. thanks.
