http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,67038.0.htmlMy comments refer to the HUAWEI E1550 modem supplied by MegaFon (Russia).
I'm in Novosibirsk and we connected to internet the other day using a MegaFon Wireless internet stick.
SIM card> 25Ryb, USB Modem 3G > 825 Ryb ..ie thats a total of AU $32 so far....
+ unlimited internet prepay 700 Ryb / month for 3 GB download.
(thats another AU $26 per month)
@ 3.6 Mbit/sec download speed. I get about 1.3 Mbit/s indoors.
Yes the speed is shaped to approx dialup when you exceed 3GB, but an extra 3GB datablock @ full speed is just another AU $13..
Oh, and there is no contract!
But the best part is that the Linux driver is included on the modem stick.
A CD device icon appeared when I plugged the E1550 stick in - I copied the drivers folder to my desktop - open the folder as root, and ran the provided script named
install_linux
When install was complete I rebooted, plugged in the modem stick and an application GUI launched - nearly identical in look and function to the Windows version! The app announced it was verifying SIM card state and confirmed coms with the modem, I clicked connect and presto - we are on line!

So how about that!!..... Somewhere in this world some of us need to do a bit of catching up!
