No sound through laptop speakers, headphone jack ok
« on: June 29, 2010, 02:58:42 PM »
Installed pclos 2010 a week ago and haven't had sound through the speakers since. When I plug my external speakers into the headphone jack works perfect with no loss in volume. ver.2007 worked fine, what happened?  KMix is at 100%. I'm no expert. Left windows less than a year ago and I DON'T want to go back. Help! Toshiba Satellite A205-S5000.

I had the same problem and I installed gmixer and found out that the PC speaker was muted unchecked the Mute and increased the PC speaker to Max then I had sound and was able to adjust it with the volume applet.

Hi sdl92.
If you are running kde click your sound icon in the panel, then mixer, check all volumes, you may need to add missing channels.

If you go into the mixer and find the speaker is not there, drag it from the left side to the right. But you may also need to raise its volume. If that gets the speaker there but you still have no sound, make sure your master channel volume is not all the way down as well.

It would help to know what kind of sound system you have in this beast.  If it's an Intel, try looking in the switches section of Kmixer for an External Amplifier switch.  Turn that off and see if it brings you around.  You may also have to swap Master Volume and Headphone channels in the configuration file (from PCC).  I remember the intel sound card for my old Gateway 3522GZ was a very versatile little beastie (almost too versatile), and I had to do this to get it working correctly  (it's an "option" line in the sound card's config).  Sometimes you might also find the "headphone" jack is actually configured as a line-out, but if that's the case, the "headphone" mixer control would not control it.

In some cases, the actual "PC Speaker" in a laptop is merely a small Sonalert, and has nothing whatever to do with the internal speakers.  I don't think Toshiba is one of those types, but it's been a while since I split a Satellite open.  (That requires patience, a nylon guitar pick, a set of precision phillips screwdrivers, and a good screw map - lots of different lengths in at least two different thread sizes...).

You might also try checking for a hardware speaker mute switch or volume control (although your external speakers would maybe not play if that's the case... hmm.)   Those hardware switches can be on the upper bezel of your keyboard area, or on the edges of the case somewhere.

In the worst case, it could be that the leads for your internal speakers are disconnected, but that seems kinda high and outside at this point.

I hope you get this sorted out without too much trouble.

Later On,
D

Welcome to PCLOS and the forums.
I hope you get your sound issues resolved. I would hate to see someone going back to Windows over a problem like this.
BTW, threatening to go back to Windows when you have a problem, won't get it solved any faster. ;D
Trust me, I've tried it and it don't work. ;D

I'm not the OP, but I appreciate the responses nonetheless. I had the same issue that the OP had. Your responses led me to KMix --> Settings --> Configure Channels

I added my main speakers to the Visible Channels and voila, I have sound! ;D

Thanks!

Isn't there a physical volume control on that machine? It is turned up, isn't it?
I know this might be obvious, please don't be offended, I did it once myself!

If an Intel sound card you might try this, it works for some and not for others:
