[SOLVED]! External drive not detected
« on: June 27, 2010, 09:47:12 PM »
Hi!

I was just wondering why my lenovo laptop cannot mount my 360GB western digital usb external drive. I plugged it in then opened dolphin but found no drives associated with my external drive. I formatted it as an NTFS system. It should be auto detect right?

please help

thanks

It doesn't show up at all?

Does it show in the Control Center?

Was it removed correctly from the last system it was attached to?
There is no shame in saying "I don't know".

Make sure you have installed ntfs-3g driver in Synaptic.
Also ntfs-config is a GUI configuration tool to enable/disable write support for NTFS devices.
After installing reboot.

Is this one of those external drives built around a laptop (2.5 inch) drive?  Some of those are provided with a special cable that allows you to plug in an extra USB port in case one port can't supply enough power.  Usually, the "computer" end of the cable has two heads, one for data and power and the other for just power (the data pins are not active or not present).  You might check, if this is the case, that you have the correct cable ends connected, or try plugging both plugs on the computer end of the cable in to two different ports and see if the drive comes on line.

Of course, if you see a power/activity light on this drive already, then it's probably as others have said with regard to having the right software for NTFS filesystem usage.

Good Hunting, and I hope your problem gets solved.

Later On,
D

If fdisk doesn't see it then you can't mount it manually or reformat it.

I formatted it as an NTFS system.

On what OS did you format it with and with what tool?

I originally formatted it on a Window$ 7 system.. used the default formatting method.. after that, i switched back to PCLOS system (my system have dual OS) then plugged in the device and it worked!...

i was able to see the files that i transferred from window$... after a few more days, it is undetectable already,  but when i try plugging it in back to window$, it was detected..

i maybe missing something here..

thanks

If you haven't already..
Shutdown your computer. Plug in the USB drive. Then boot up PCLOS with the external drive already plugged in.
Then see if it shows up in KDE if not fdsik -l as root again and see if it's listed.

If that doesn't work I suggest you boot from your PCLOS Live CD and see if you can plug it in and have it be detected normally as before. Then you will be able to narrow down where the problem is.

Hi there!

I just found an answer to this one... We'll there was a conflict with one of the device I attached to my system. I currently plugged in a 3G USB device that I used to connect to internet. I made "rules" file for it to connect. unfortunately, it somehow restricts the use on my USB ports limited to that device only. I just modified the filename of that rule so that it will not be executed by the system again.

now my external drive is back to business

KUDOS!

regards
