How long can you run the Live CD?
« on: June 24, 2010, 07:50:25 AM »
I have access to a second system here at the office. It's an older WinXP system that still has files on it that need to be archived, moved, etc.  From time to time, I pop in the PCLinuxOS 2010 Live CD to check things out. Assuming that my DVD drive is still pretty healthy, how long can I run the Live CD?  All day?

So long as you don't run out of available RAM, you can continue to run.

Thanks, guys.  the reson I ask is because this second box is just sitting here.  I have a KVM switch attached so I can toggle between the current Office system (Windows 7) and the older office WinXP system.  The older system is clogged with years of files, etc.  So, there's no room on the  the hard drive to do a dual boot.  And I can't install over Windows XP...yet.:)  So, I figured if I could at least run the Live CD, I'd have access to PCLinuxOS during the day.:)

I once ran from the live CD for over a month. As long as you don't run out of RAM, you'll be fine.

It sure is!  I'm running it right now!  The Live CD, on this system, runs so much faster than the WinXP install!

WELL, if you ran the LiveCD for a month, must not have shut down.... OR is there a way to save all the settings you are using in LiveCD, i.e. If I run the 2010 Install LiveCD, can settings be saved?  Can't find a thread on this.

Correct. As far as saving settings, I didn't save any. I don't think there are any persistence settings in the PCLOS live CD session. It has a different purpose. If there were, you could save your settings to an external or internal drive, or a flash drive. Almost all Puppy Linux CDs work that way. In other words, you boot and run from the live CD, and data files and runtime settings are saved to a local drive.

Has anyone tried using a 'changes' boot code with the LiveCD to maybe save changes to a USB flash drive or internal HDD partition?

I don't use CDs anymore so have never tried it .......

I don't think there are any persistence settings in the PCLOS live CD session.

I recall the previous edition (2009) having a prominently displayed option (in the menu and/or on the desktop) for easily creating a bootable USB flash drive* , which offered the option of persistence at each boot.

I've been wondering what happened to that in the 2010 edition.

*I had done just that but whenever I booted and ran from it, it was only a matter of time before the keyboard would suddenly just lock-up completely. I don't know whether any else experienced this or not.

So long as you don't run out of available RAM, you can continue to run.

And, if you want to extend that (I'll make a few assumptions  :o here:
  • 1. You've mounted XP's drives in order to access the data
  • 2. You've done #1. as read/write, in order to work with the data
  • 3. You're aware of the location of pagefile.sys in the XP system
in order to facilitate this suggestion), try the following...

As root (I'll assume the XP drive containing pagefile.sys is mounted at /media/disk):
Code: [Select]
mkswap /media/disk/pagefile.sys
swapon /media/disk/pagefile.sys

This will give you some virtual memory, using the pagefile.sys from XP, which is already consuming drive space, without needing to re-partition the drive...
