Same problem - rtl8187 alfa usb dongle. Much stronger signal in xp than any Linux. Suspect linux driver in kernel is poor.

Would it be worth trying another kernel?
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

I suspect it's the driver that the linux kernel is using. Don't think a different kernel will help. I think realtek needs to improve it's linux driver for this chipset.

I realise you have that certain usb-dongle... but if it ain't working...

I have a spare SMC EZ Connect N Draft 11n Wireless Cardbus that PCLOS picks up right-a-way.  Maybe it's just having the wrong hardware piece, that PCLOS sees.....just a thought.

Hi rsd220

I don't have rtl8187 but with my Intel WiFi Link 5100 I get varying signal strengths according to how I measure.
Pre-connect, draknet-center reports signal strength at 10%, but once I connect, it reports 70%. So there is a big discrepancy between the two.
And winxp gets a higher sig strength.  >:( >:(
Sorry, not a clue as to addressing the problem, just offering the point about diff signal strength.
btw, I have installed all kernel updates as the are offered & never found any difference. Currently with 2.6.33.5-pclos1.bfs.

rtl8187 considerably stronger in xp. will connect to more networks, and at faster speeds. On one network, I get 1mb in linux and 3 to 5 mb in xp. Some networks won't even connect in linux but will in xp.This is not pclos problem. I wish realtek would fix the problem with this popular chipset.

Can you find the .info file on the Windows installer? Maybe you could try ndiswrapper and try that one? (ndiswrapper -i blabla.inf)

One more question. Signal strenght given is one thing but what is the download speed compared with Windows?

EDIT: Found a Windows driver here that contains a .info file (Netrtuw.inf). Worth trying?

Is it possible to change to another channel?
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

I have a  rtl 8187 usb wireless adapter purchased from dealextreme.com. I struggled for weeks and weeks trying to get a decent connection.

I finally solved the problem by getting the xp driver from my wireless cd..
.I then used ndiswrapper :          pcc <network & internet <setup up a new network interface <wireless <use windows driver < install a new driver........

Connection works great :)

So I installed the ndiswrapper driver for my wifi card and it was slower than the kernel driver. I would love to know why I can get a download speed of 4 mb. with this card in xp and at best 1 mb in linux IF I can connect at all. ??
