Greetings all. Updated the repository and attempted to install iscan-2.24.0-4.i386.rpm as per Texstar's thread of February 8. Came up with the following:
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
file /usr/sbin/iscan-registry from install of iscan-2.24.0-4 conflicts with file from package saned-1.0.21-1pclos2010
file /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa.la from install of iscan-2.24.0-4 conflicts with file from package sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010
file /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa.so.1.0.15 from install of iscan-2.24.0-4 conflicts with file from package sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010
And of course iscan-2.24.0-4 does not install.
So trying to be intelligent is immediately uninstalled sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010. Then attempted a reinstall of scan-2.24.0-4.i386.rpm. The end result was:
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
file /usr/sbin/iscan-registry from install of iscan-2.24.0-4 conflicts with file from package saned-1.0.21-1pclos2010. could not find this file or whatever it is in saned-1.0.21-1pclos2010.
Try as I may, could not locate anything referred to in the above. Have tried a few times to install Iscan after reinstalling sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010.
Have searched through the threads of all the problems with iscan but unable to find anything of significance.
Works well in PCLOS 1009. Any clues anyone, and all help would be welcome as I need the scanner in KDE4.4.   THANKS williamj

Hi Williamj,

you should move this post to 'broken package' section, because surely the iscan package seems broken/not compatible with other packages,

cheers,
MBantz

He is trying to install something outside of the repository.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

In other words, it belongs in the Advanced Users section.

Look back at those errors again and you will see removing one package was only half the job. If you have removed both you might need to rebuild the rpm database.

Gooday to the world.

Well I have read the comments. I realised that -U may have had something to do with the problem (but it should not have) so I reinstalled with -i. Same result.

Sorry kjpetrie I do not understand your comment. Yes I know that some file (or something) is not being removed but I am unable to remove whatever this is:
file /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa.so.1.0.15 from install of iscan-2.24.0-4 conflicts with file from package sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010. The question is what is this file and where is it.
Package sane-backend-iscan-1.o.21-1pclos2010 was removed through Synaptic and therefore one would assume that it removed everything. How wrong you can be. Obviously it has left a dag somewhere. The idea was to remove all of sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010, including this odd 'remaining' part of package sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010. Install iscan-2.24.0-4 then reinstall this package sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010. I have downloaded another copy of iscan-2.24.0.4 for fedora and it gives the same results.

I do recall having a similar problem way back in early PCLOS2009 but the fix complete eludes me at this time.

If someone can tell me how to get rid of this odd part of package sane-backends-iscan-1.0.21-1pclos2010, I could retry the installation and if that rpm is successful, reinstall the iscan-backend. In the meantime I shall look further. Someone must have had a similar problem as Iscan is a must for getting Epson scanners working.

Again thanks williamj

I think the best solution would be to make a package suggest for an update of iscan. This way the update is controlled and all iscan users will be helped out,

You need to remove saned using Synaptic. What else that will break I don't know. Installing from outside the repo is not supported.

#Force install the outside package
rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps iscan-2.24.0-4.i386.rpm

then

# remove the package from the rpm database so synaptic won't report it as broken package
rpm -e --justdb iscan

<SOLVED -It is interesting> Re: Iscan in KDE4.4 cannot install RPM

Gooday again to all

Thanks to all for the effort. After studying what Texstar and others had to say I had a Google and found that Sane-backend-iscan was well featured and giving trouble and that Suse/Mandriva and other OSs had written new rpms. Decided to look at Iscan at www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/index.html and the old files of 48 hours earlier had been replaced.with two new ones namely 'iscan-data-1.0.0-2.noarch.rpm', 'iscan-2.2.25.0-1.i386.rpm' and the old iscan-plugin rpm file was still there.

Well into the terminal and install and guess what it did not work. Why? It is necessary to remove the old iscan files from the repository and also 'iscan-backend and saned'. Best to do a reboot and then install the new iscan files in the order as laid out above (ignore the warning after installing the iscan-data rpm) and everything works great.

It was an interesting exercise and I had it up in an hour. Have not had time to return to the Forum since the 24/6.
Again thanks for the ideas Texstar and others.

WilliamJ.
