<Putting on Hold>Onboard Ethernet Not Detected
« on: June 22, 2010, 05:54:13 PM »
I have an Elite mobo with an onboard Ethernet connection. PCLOS normally doesn't see it but since I just put in my last good PCI Ethernet card I thoght I'd make an effort to configure it. I assume it is a Via because twice in the last three or four years a Ethernet labeled Via has shown up on the network manager. It was never there for more then one session and I never actually tried to use it.

An internet search wasn't really helpful. I did try plugging my Ethernet cble today before putting in a new card but no luck.

When I first built this computer I posted here about it but that was at least four years ago. General consensus was Via is not supported but I hoped support would eventually be built in to the kernel.

Well... there is a possibility that the integrated network card is not working ...

If you try to boot the computer with any other live CD and find that it is not showing in them or that it might show up in the network manager that the CD might provide but it fails to function, well, it most definitive does not work and you should disable it at the bios of said motherboard.

Just that, that's all I can think of... use a pci lan card or pci wifi for that matter!

Good luck!

If anything else, post more info.

I suppose you have confirmed it is enabled in the BIOS?

Does it show in the PCLOS Hardware list?
If so what info shows?

I don't recall a setting in Bios. I've never tried with another OS. It does not appear in Hardware. You have given me two good things to try but I would have to reboot the computer and with my other problems there is a reasonable chance it won't reboot. Till I'm ready to work on that problem I'm just going to put the Ethernet problem on hold.

Of course it has shown up a couple of times in PCLOS for a very short time then vanished so I'm leaning toward cold solder joint or broken trace. It is a cheap MB.

Thank you for the replies.
