Ran into the same problem on a new LXDE install. Uninstalling and reinstalling OOo didn't work. It works now.

Used a combination of Neal's and genomega's methods. First created ~/.ooo3 directory. Then started Writer from the menu. In Writer's menu, went to Tools > Options, then OpenOffice.org > User Data in left panel. Filled in some info and saved. That did the trick.

I don't know. But, there was something I was going to try next. I compressed the .ooo3 folder on my e17 install. I was then going to copy it to the LXDE install and un-compress it. Also, I did uninstall OOo, then re-install, but Writer froze on save. I then did the method I listed. Maybe replacing the ~/.ooo3 folder will work for you.

I renamed .ooo3 and created it again, put the info in User Data and restarted OOo; still freezes at save and save as.

I'm using e17 and KDE4 for now but I miss the crispness of LXDE  :-\

This happened to me also on new install. After I filled in all of the personal information it worked as expected.

Did any of you try this?  That did it for me!  I know some of you did - but maybe it's worth another shot :)

Edit:  It's at Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > User Data .

Yes, I did. It worked for me. Many thanks. (See post at top of this page.) Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work for Crow.
