Acer Aspire One Netbook

Hello Everyone: Just for general interest in case anyone searches the Netbook section, I have PCLinuxOS 2010.1 installed from a usb flash drive and duel booted with win XP, installed on a Acer Aspire One netbook, with a 160 gig HD and 2 gigs of ram. Fully updated and using KDE4. everything works including sound and wireless and I just used the defaults on everything. I bought this a a Christmas present for my wife and it was a factory refurb, manufactured in 06. She also uses a wireless mouse with it. hope this helps.

Since my post (#12, above) my Aspire One (AO150) died - perhaps as a result of grand kid abuse.  Won't boot, screen doesn't light up - nothing.

Good news is, a couple weeks back, I stumbled into a Walmart deal ($199) on a newer model (D255 - Atom 450, 1gB ram, 160 gB HDD, Win XP, 6 cell battery) and I'm even more pleased with it.

Here's my two cents, adjusted for inflation. Back with 2009.x, I was never competent enough to get PCLOS onto a USB stick. I found it helpful to buy an external DVD-rw for about eighty bucks (US$). I can install all my PCLOS versions, play movies, etc. Usually I leave the dvd-rw at home, and break it out when needed. For me, in the long run, that was the simplest way to get PCLOS onto my Acer Aspire One. By the way, mine only has 8gigs of memory, no HD, just flash memory. I have 512meg ram. It sometimes takes a bit of shoe-horning to get PCLOS on, but with some judicious program removal with Synaptic it runs smoothly. I like having the iso on a more permanent medium than flash. Besides, it's handy having an extra dvd-rw around for my netbook, my towers, my laptop, and all.

I'm looking in to purchasing an Aspire One after selling my dead ASUS for parts. 

I can't say I'm comfortable installing from a USB stick as I've never done it, but from what I can gather, using an external optical drive is fairly straightforward... correct?

absolutely , but from a usb stick is just as easy. the first one I ever did was to my acer aspire one. easy as a CD install.

If you have PCLOS running on another machine .....  live or installed ......  you can use the "PCLinuxOS-liveUSB" app (may already be installed) to create a live USB of PCLOS.

Using USB stick is much faster to boot and a whole lot faster to install.

I have a Asus eee 1000H and have installed besides my good old XP all the PCLinuxOS flavors I could get and run them via session chooser. So I can play with all of them whenever I like to. All the desktop versions are stable and running with good speed and everything just works fine. (That's why I stick to PCLOS )

I always try distributions with Live USB and install made with Unetbootin without any problem. Sometimes it will not start but then it is a download or a distribution problem.

Hi, I have PCLinuxOS 2010.12 iLinux 2.6.38.2-pclos1.bfs i686 installed from a usb DVDRW drive and duel booted with Windows 7 Ultimate. I have installed it on a Acer Aspire One D255 netbook, with a 160 gig HD & 1 gigs of ram. Fully updated and using KDE4 everything works including sound, wireless & my SD card were detected automatically. Nice work Tex !!!

I got the Acer Aspire One weeks ago, same model - same price.  I installed PCLinuxOS and ist working great.  Even with 3d switched on.  I just need to find a way to open that netbook and upgrade RAM and HD.  The only thing is, the speakers are not working.  Any ideas what to do about it?

If it has a HDMI connector then the sound system may be trying to use that as default and not the sound card.

Hi All,
I just installed PCLinuxOS Full Monty 2011.4 to my Daughter's Acer Aspire One net-book.  It went smoothly and all worked straight away.  It's hard to believe how well it works on this tiny little PC.  It was responsive and easy to read and all the fancy windows were a pleasure to tour.(works best adding a scroll mouse)  I originally thought this would be too much for it, but FM was the first choice on my wish list, as she lives 2 hours away and FM has most everything already installed. She has the smaller LCD screen and only the original 1 gig of ram.  I did not even try to enable effects.  I wanted to keep things simple, was limited for time and pretty sure it would be a waste of time anyway.  I used a USB external DVD drive for installation and took 20gig for /(root), 2gig for swap and the rest for /home.  She had a 160 gig drive.  No more ms virus calls...     She did call to say how happy she was with it.
So, thanks again to Texstar, Pinoc and all that helped to make PCLinuxOS and Full Monty what it is today!

I know you posted thie sonme time ago and I obviously missed it... DOH! but...

If it appears that the AO150 is a 'brick' it may be to do with an issue the default bios had, fortunatly the earlier AcerOnes have a built in - emergency bios recovery that brings them back to life.

Update other ACER  AO772-BZ454N, 2gigs, 240GHD. Tried installing 2011.7Mini.  Would not install correctly, wireless would freeze computer, a number of other conflicts made it very discouraging.  Tried other distros with latest kernel with similar and different problems.

After a week of failures I tried a copy of 2010.12 Mini. Had to install it with a USB CD Drive and an USB thum drive with the livecd.sqfs file copied to the root of the thumb drive. I was able to install into partition.

Reinstalled Mini 2010 a third time because it would freeze after updates.

This time I did the Aptupgrade first. Reloaded the repositories and installed the xorg upgrades first rebooted. Installed drak upgrades rebooted, installed KDE upgrades, rebooted.  Then I did all of the other upgrades.
 
Had to install kcm touchpad to make the pad work. Camera worked with wxCam but that not in new repositories

Not working audio from streaming video, this seems to be a problem with Acer HDMI units as noted somewhere else on this forum. Regular audio from mp3 files play well and loud.
