Internal microphone not working in skype
« on: June 20, 2010, 08:42:33 AM »
Hi!

I've recently installed PCLOS, and so far, very impressed - thanks for all the hard work that goes into the distribution, much appreciated.

I do have one problem, if anyone is able to help me? I am running PCLinuxOS with KDE4, and have the sound card recognized as "Intel HDA driver (snd_HDA_Intel [ALSA])

With this configuration, both Skype static and skype (what's the difference, why are there two versions in the reps?) give no audio from the built in microphone.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I could sort this out, please?

Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks,

Colin

Does your microphone work in other apps?

If it does, click the tiny icon that opens the "Main Menu" in Skype, then "Options", then "Sound Devices" and test all the devices under "Microphone" one by one until you find one that works. Click "Apply" and make a test call every time you change anything.

If the microphone doesn't work in other apps either, then it isn't a Skype problem.

Hi Blackbird,

Thanks for posting, it seems that the microphone does not work in any apps, as far as I can see.

Cheers,

Colin

Edit: Could a mod move this over to hardware for me, please? Alternatively, does anyone know how I can get the microphone to work?

Is the microphone listed in kmix? Is it turned on, (not muted)?

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

I found a post somewhere about getting the proper drivers for sound cards. I'm looking for it now but not having much luck. I had to do with finding your sound card and then going to a website to look up the proper driver and then you entered the driver in PCC. It fixed my non working mic issue.

I will keep looking for it and if I find it I will update. Maybe the description will jog someones memory and know where it is.
(EDIT) I found it. Try this and see if you can get it working.

On some cameras with built-in mics, there is an inconspicuous on/off switch which mutes the mic - try fiddling around to see if that's it?

edit: Remembering of course, to try each of the options in sound, but try the "usb devices" first!!!

Sweating it out on a laptop of a aspirant convert with the same sound chip (A Asus X8AIJ). Same as you, no working mic. Moreover the video screen shows me up side down!  The horror is, this convert is a fervent  Skype user. I see a "failure" looming. In this case it is: No Skype, no Linux!
Just like you I can do with any help and will follow your thread in the hope someone got the right ideas/knowledge.

To fix the upside down webcam:

Go into the menu editor, and change the command for skype to the following:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

I also have the no microphone problem.  Very frustrating, because I had it working on this same laptop under Debian Testing.  So I know there is a solution out there...  My laptop is a Asus K50I.

I have a non functioning mic on my Acer Aspire One netbook.  Cam, speakers, headset audio/mic sockets all work but no internal mic (adjacent camera).  My solution was to connect an external USB Skype handset which works great except for limited LCD display (don't care).  Most external USB mics should work fine - and easier to control feedback too.
My Skype phone is a few years old but looks very similar to this one>

finally got the microphone working!
Basically just had to play around in kmix for a while.  Under settings>configure channels, made all the channels visible.
Checked the smart 5.1 box.
Enabled both capture and moved the slider half way up.
Moved the digital slider all the way up.
Selected front mic as the input source.
Front mic boost should be 3/4 up.  (oddly, front mic can be muted and slider all the way down)

At least this is what worked for me.  It looks like the sliders are not properly labeled in ALSA, and therefore in kmix as well.  Presumably this is a bug in ALSA???

With the above settings I was able to use skype call testing, using default input device.  Interestingly, if I leave the "automatically adjust mixer levels" box checked, skype adjusts the front mic boost.

Anyways, I hope this helps someone out there!

for me it was the damned "5.1" that should be UNchecked (X) for the mike to work (ASUS p5g41T-M on board microphone/KDE4)
many thanks phrenchax!!! 8)
