Saving Images With LiveCD
« on: June 16, 2010, 11:25:04 PM »
I would like to use PC Linux OS Live CD as an easy way to blog using Wordpress on any computer that I may have available.

Sometimes, I like to add pictures to my Wordpress blog posts.  When I find a picture while running on the Live CD (copy to RAM), and I right click on the image and then click "save image as", nothing happens.

Is saving images disabled on the Live CD?  I was hoping to save the image on a "virtual desktop" or at the very least, on a thumb drive until I could crop it and then upload to Wordpress.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You should be able to access most storage devices with the live CD.  You'll have to open dolphin, then open the device location you want to store your files first.  If you do this, you will "mount" the storage volume to gain read/write access.  Until you mount the device, you won't be able to access it.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dulwithe

I have used Dolphin to open the desktop and also the usb key to mount both of them.

Still, when I am on a webpage in Firefox and I right click on an image, I get the message "save image as" and when I select this option, nothing happens.

What are your computer's specs? In particular, RAM.

I am using a pc that has a core 2 Intel processor with 2 GB RAM.

I am also using Firefox as my browser and just noticed that when I installed the Picnik plugin, the save as started working about 80% of the time.  Still flakey, just not sure why it's giving issues.

I'm also using the latest version of PC Linux OS, I had just downloaded it last night.

When working from the liveCD, it is important to remember that you are working from RAM. The more you add to the system, and the longer you use the system, the more RAM you are using. Eventually, you will run out of space in RAM.
It sounds like this is what happened to you. You filled up your RAM.

Thanks for the suggestion Neal.  I would have thought that as well, but immediately after rebooting the pc, I tried the right click save as and it didn't work.  It's only after installing Picnik that it works about 80% of the time.

I've also tried it on two different computers (same make/model/hardware), same issue.

Could it be that 2GB is not enough RAM or perhaps there is something about this model computer?

Is it possible to save the image to your "/home" folder and then copy/move it to your USB stick?

Pretty busy these days, but tonight if I have time I'll boot up a live CD and see if I can do what you did, and report back as to how well it works.

Stay tuned...

I believe that 2GB is not enough, if you're working with large files. Some graphics file formats are much "heavier" than others and will need much more RAM.
This will not be a problem on the installed system.

Thanks everyone for your comments

@neal, The images I am downloading are small jpegs that have been "optimized" for webpages.

@Dulwithe, I'm really looking forward to hearing the results of your testing tonight.  Just to verify we are testing the same thing, if you go to the page http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/33709/rim-readying-blackberry-tablet-wsj , you will see a picture of a Blackberry.

If you right click on it and go "save image as", a dialog box to save the image does not appear.
After I installed picnik and retried, it works much better but still not 100%.

Worst come to worst, I'll just load the plugin when I use the live CD, I like it anyways but it would be interesting to see if you have the same issue.

Did you check to see if the image is blocked?

@neal How would I tell if the images are blocked?  I do see the images load when I go to the website if that's what you mean?

You had mentioned earlier that it may be a lack of memory and perhaps that is what it is because I've noticed that even after installing Picnik, the save as worked for a while and then stopped.

Is there any way to "clear" the RAM every so often without rebooting?

You have the live system loaded into RAM, you have the apps you start loaded into RAM, this includes cookies from browser use, anything you download is loaded into RAM, and anything you install is loaded into RAM. In other words, every bit of the activity you do is in RAM, loaded from the CD or from the web. The more you do, and the longer you do it, the more RAM you use. It is in the nature of running "live."
To keep it lower, try quiting (not just closing) any applications you are not using. Delete browser cookies and cache. In your file manager, delete the thumbnails - /home/guest/.thumbnails/normal. This will regain some RAM. Do not wait till you're near full to do this. If you wait too long, you may not be able to perform these actions due to a lack of RAM.

Would you try doing the same 'save as' operation from the website using Konqueror Browser .......  it may be something in Firefox rather than RAM or OS problems.
