madwifi got me nowhere.  The machine couldn't find the network card with it, so I went back to ath5k.

With a fresh cup of coffee this morning, I went back through the config files, and realized that the line "update_config=1" was commented out in wpa_supplicant.conf.  Removed the "#" and reconfigured, and voila! I had a connection.

Thanks to all who contributed their ideas!

Open WEP works on mine.
Restricted WEP only works sometimes.

I work a lot with cybersecurity types.  I'd get laughed out of the conference room if I showed up with WEP.  Actually I'd get hacked, and THEN I'd get laughed out of the conference room. ;)

Hi,

Can I ask what type of modem you are using ?
I have an AT&T residential modem.

THX.

Well my modem has no administrative program to setup
a network, with passwords and so forth.   It has 4 ethernet
connections, and is supposed to be able to do as many
wifi connections as a home network also.   But, it only works
with Open WEP and the modem key.   I've never tried
more than one connection for wifi at the same time.   I assume
it would work up to 4 wifi connections at the same time with
Open WEP and the key  only.   I thought your modem might
have the luxury of an administrative program where I could
use WPA, passwords, or other administrative monitoring,
usage logs, sharing, and so forth for a wifi network if I was the
administrator of the network.

Thanks for the response.

Ah, okay.  My modem does not have an integrated router, my Wifi is via an external router (a Netgear, but I don't recall the model.)  If you are at all concerned about security, it may be worth getting a separate Wifi Access Point that supports WPA.  WEP was broken as a security protocol a few years ago.  Either that or pester AT&T to upgrade your modem to one that supports WPA.
