It starts now...  A few days rest, and all is up and running well...  Why, I don't know...  Thanks for all your ideas and I am glad it seems like other people got to troubleshooting another digikam issue too.  Good stuff!

I did this again, and also removed all of ' showFoto '.

Seems to be stable now

I removed all digikam stuff from all folders that I could find including the .kde4 folder.
I don't have showFoto installed.
I completely uninstalled and reinstalled digikam from synaptic and it still hangs up for me. :(

Don't know if this is relevant, but my Digikam shortcut disappeared from the menu.
I have it on the desktop, and it works . Otherwise Digikam is running fine.

I did not want to reinstall the OS, but because none of the suggestions worked for me, I took the plunge and started from scratch.

So far digikam is working properly. I guess something was whacked out in the settings that I couldn't get straight.  The fresh install fixed it.

Now if I can just figure out why Audacity doesn't  work, I'll be in good shape.
