Scanner device not found in ZenMini
« on: June 14, 2010, 09:31:38 AM »
I installed Xane and plugged in my Epson scanner.  It said device not found, do you want to install manually.  My model was listed and I clicked it.  When I go to run Xane, it says device not found.  I know it is communicating with the USB since it moves the carriage once it is plugged it.  Did I miss a step somewhere?

Sometimes we can have a hard time at configuring a scanner. What model is your's ? Just scanner, printer scanner ? What number ?

Does the command line "scanimage -L" (as root) bring back something ?

It is an Epson Perfection 1660 Photo.  I'm not near that computer now, but I will try the command later.

Some technical informations are available here:
http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=Epson&model=Perfection+1660+Photo&bus=usb&v=&p=

Look at the line of your model:
Quote
Perfection 1660    USB    0x04b8/0x011e    complete

With the link at the right part of this line, you get here:
http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-epson.5.html

You may need help to get into this doc... please take a look and see what you can get out of it. If other people want to try to help by getting into it too...

. How did You configure Your printer (in PCC?) ? As a root in terminal write "lsusb" and past here and I need to see "dmesg" (will be big...)

Good luck!

Hi siamer,
Just... his device is a scanner only item, this is what it looks like:

This does not prevent your commands to help see what, of course...

If the Sane web site is showing:

Perfection 1660    USB    0x04b8/0x011e    complete

Then the scanner is supported.  All he should need to do is open PCC and configure the scanner, then it should work fine.

I used PCC to set the scanner up.  It says "Your scanner is not in our database.  Do you want to set it up manually?"  I click yes and get a list of scanners.  Mine is in the list so I check it.  It then says my scanner is ready for use via xsane.  I open xsane and it says no device found.  If I go back to PCC, the process starts all over again like it wasn't installed. I also installed task-printing-scanning.  Any ideas?

Ok let's start from begin ;)

Scanner is usb and "lsusb" is showing usb devices connected to computer so first make sure that "lsusb" will show you your scanner, maybe just computer not see your scanner at all ?... <-- it's important melodie  ;)

I asked to install "task-printing-scanning" because it have all dependiencies for scanners + printers. I removed all printers + scanners drivers to make ZEN really mini... So I still suggest to install it, or just install task-scanning (I think there is task-scanning - i'm in work now and not using ZEN so name can be little different...)...

I asked as well for "dmesg" if USB scanner is connected than kernel will see it and will load special module for that scanner and will try to connect to scanner <--- that will show as dmesg (dmesg is info from kernel...) ;)

At least I think it should be like that :P

goog luck!

I had installed task-printing-scanning and all dependencies per your suggestion.  It does appear that the computer "sees" the scanner.  Here is some of the output:

usb 4-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
usb 4-2: New USB device found, idVendor=04b8, idProduct=011e
usb 4-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
usb 4-2: Product: EPSON Scanner
usb 4-2: Manufacturer: EPSON
usb 4-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Have you installed the Epson driver for this unit? (from the manufacturer)

Is there anything I can do with this?

http://support.epson.ru/upload/library_file/11/scanner_linux.pdf

Yes ! Download it, and read it : particularly the section dedicated to your model. :)

OK.  Thanks.  If I learn anything, I'll post it here.

I might mess around with this too:

I have had to manually edit the config file to get some scanners to work:

edit the last 4 lines of  /etc/sane.d/epson.conf  to read:

usb 0x4b8 0x011e
# And for the scanner module, use the following configuration:
#usb /dev/usbscanner0
usb /dev/usb/scanner0

then rename /etc/sane.d/epson2.conf to epson2.conf2

Xsane should then pick up your scanner
