(Solved) hard drive monitoring
« on: June 13, 2010, 11:51:40 PM »
With Windows i'm using Hard Disk Sentinel so that i can see if there's any bad clusters, the temperature of the drive and other information. What would be the software that can replace it in PCLinux OS ?

Thanks dubigrasu, will try it.

I also installed smartmontools but can not seem to start it using the command smartctl -i /dev/hda but i'll see what GSmartControl can do :)

GSmartControl works fine and for the command line it was my mistake it should be smartctl -i /dev/sda  8) so it's sda rather than hda...

Ok thanks, i'll look for some applets but basically i'm more interested to see if there's any bad clusters or predicted hardware failure and also i need the program to be able to see it even if the hard drive is external.

I troubleshoot computers and has you know one of the reason that a computer is slowing down could be because the drive is having problem. In Windows, Hard Disk Sentinel does it for me, i have an icon in the TaskBar that is always there monitoring my drive and any other drive that i connect to my laptop using USB Port. Because i want to use only PCLinux OS for everything that i do i would like the software to do about the same if possible and if not i don't mind going back to Windows from time to time :)

gkrellm (along with gkrellm-plugins) is supposed to be able to monitor HDtemp, but it didn't display anything for me  :(
(CPU temp displayed fine)

You need to install it from Synaptic, first  ;)
