machine "hibernates" after 5 minutes or so of inactivity
« on: June 12, 2010, 07:32:28 AM »
i changed over to the gnome 2010 release after finding that the kde4 desktop was not going to work for me and i've developed a fondness for it, but am having one minor problem that i cant seem to figure out. i like to listen to talk radio streams on rhythmbox while i'm working or browsing and that works out just fine but if i leave the machine for 5-min or so it goes "dead". i dont mean a complete shutdown but just requires a nudge of the mouse or punch a key and it's back up and going. i went to system>preferences>screensaver and set the "regard computer as idle after" to 2 hours and unchecked the "activate screensaver" box.
then went to power management and set 'computer to sleep' and 'display to sleep' as never. no change.......... still goes down after about 5 min or so. am i missing something here? thnx 4 reading.

I don't use Gnome but mebbe your desktop needs to be restarted before your settings kick in.

thank you for the reply, menotu, but i have rebooted the machine many times since changing those settings.  am presuming that's what you meant. i'm not a computer geek or nerd, just a user so i'm betting this is just something glaringly obvious, but danged if i know what it is?! one wants to be able to kick-back in the easy chair or the bed and listen to their computer "radio" without having to get up every 5 minutes and nudge the mouse...know what i mean?

I think I've got a VBox VM of Gnome knocking around somewhere - I'll see if I can find it and have a look-see.

Click on System -> Preferences -> The 2nd Screensaver Entry and uncheck the box that says Activate Screensaver when computer is idle -> Press the Close button.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

i did that. Texstar, but it made no difference. i thought for sure that unchecking that box, as you suggested, would solve the prob but...?!  it must just be some kind of glich in my hardware or something. i appreciate the attention y'all gave on this. B'51

I have Gnome on 3 desktops and haven't experienced this yet.  Settings are also set to "never" and that's what is happening.

Have no solution but thought I'll let you know ...

I had what may be a similar problem in KDE. I couldn't find my original post. I think it was in the 2010 beta thread. Here is a script that was suggested. It has worked great for me but I didn't save the posters name so I can't give credit.
Quote
Open KWrite and type

xset -dpms  (or whatever else you want it to do, there are lots of options for this command)

Save the file as  anything_you_want.sh

Go to the file in Dolphin and right click it. Under "Permissions", check the "Is executable" box.

Now start "Configure your desktop" and select "Advanced User Settings / Autostart".

Click on "Add Script" and add your "anything_you_want.sh" script. Say "OK" in the next screen and your script should run at boot time.

I think.   Huh
Somebody will correct me if this is wrong I hope.

BTW,, This is the hard way to do it. LOL

The command:

xset -q

gives you an idea of what your screen saver/power saver settings currently are.
